I apologize if this isn't the proper forum, I couldn't identify a specific category for this, but it does pertain to cards specifically.
I am looking for a custom made close up pad that is hard backed. This is used for card work. I remember talking to Armando Lucero some time ago about who made his and he mentioned someone but I cannot recall the name. Is anyone in the community still offering this service? Any direction would be appreciated. Kindest regards. |

Check with Patrick. He not only does custom mats but has hard back mats that fold even. He may be able to do a full hard back too.
http://www.pattricksmagic.com/ If you don't mind some DIY / Arts & Crafts, there are a couple threads in "the workshop" forum on making your own rather inexpensively. I made a few that I really liked using inexpensive car headliner material (like $8/yd at JoAnn) on a 1/4 wood base and a wooden picture frame from walmart over it. It turned out really nice and I had under $30 total in it. I just place it on an adjustable "X" shaped keyboard stand and I am good to go.

I second Poof-Daddy's recommendation. I have a number of Pattrick's mats. I like the folding ones, but I know he does custom work. I suspect he can make you what you're looking for. Good luck.

I didn't know Pattrick did hard-backed mats.
His quality is excellent though, so if he does hard-backed ones then you can't go wrong with him. My matt is from Pattrick and it's lovely. |

I have two close up mats I purchased from VanishingInc. I’m pretty sure they come from Patrick, they look really the same. I’m very disappointed by their quality, they get used very fast. The big one was 99 dollars !

Hi all, thank you for taking the time to share.
The following link has the board in question; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5rm-AepH3E I have thought about hiring a carpenter but I figured hiring a magician or one who produces these for magicians would be more ideal. I wish I could recall who Armando mentioned made that pad. It would be just perfect. And I haven't been able to get a hold of Armando. |

Count me in as another country heard from regarding Pattrick's mats. He just sent me his "monster" mat and it is terrific. I love it so much I bought one of his folding mats for my briefcase.

I don't own a mat by Patrick, but recently visited his booth at Magifest. He had a wide range of excellent mats, and his work is superb. I intend to order one soon.

Thank you for the comments. Although I don’t offer hard back mats on my website , I have made many custom hard back mats. One nice way is to use the idea I got from and old Michael Ammar lecture, using a picture frame as the base and border. I’m sure that idea has been around before. Lots of good ideas out there, you just need to find the right fir for you.

Armando’s Mat looks pretty thick so I don’t know the construction underneath. Nicely done though. I have made some with the wrap around material. A good way to transport something like this is a portfolio case used by artists to carry their sketchbooks. You can find these at Hobby Lobby ( especially with the 40% off coupon ) or Michaels or a large craft store. I am revisiting the hardback mat building process. I didn’t know there was such an interest / demand for this.

For many years I used a thick bath towel.
After being razzed for that I started selling close up mats. They are easy to make. The ingredients are: 1/4 inch thick sponge rubber sheet 3 sheets very thin pressed cardboard. The surface that is velour or some fancy cloth. Cardboard works well because it is light. When something bends it you can bend it back into shape kinda like a playing card. Don't get a cloth that has a nap. (Small threads that stick up) If you place a [ on a solid coin, the threads can get trapped. Place the sponge rubber over the cardboard. Place the cloth over the rubber, around the cardboard and tape it in place on the back. Move the tape until it looks good. Then, paint the back with thick acrylic paint. You have a mat. If you want a hard back, get something flat, thin, and smooth from Menards. Glue it to the back of the above. The secret is getting a glue that dries hard and well. I used to put fancy fringe on the edges of the pad but lately I don't bother. This kind of pad was designed for Matrix performances. The suggestion to use a portfolio case is a good one. You may destroy some material with a few tries. To avoid that, get one from Pattrick. Al

Thanx all for the Pattricks hard backed suggestion links, etc. I must say that I loved Al Schneider's post for it's story. Reminds me of David Regal's meeting with Ed Marlo, who had a "rolled up mat that looked like a dog had been chewing on it." I feel a bit spoiled by having so many ready made props available nowadays, compared to the times that magicians had to make their own. Lynn
