What are the chances that David Copperfield would do a special based on his new current show on Netflix or other
streaming service? Is he still under contract to CBS? No new specials since 2002? He is 62, how long before retirement? Wonder who would continue his show if anyone? Would he choose a successor? It will be the end of an era when he retires... |

Would it do well, though?
When was the last time a grand illusion magic special made a splash on any form of TV show? It was popular in the 80s and 90s but I suspect that now it would just the nostalgia crowd watching.

Gone are the days of a single product sponsorship for television specials. Remember, Clorox was the sponsor, that means they paid for the whole show and airing fees, and somehow Copperfield was also paid, as the actual show had to be given to the public for free.

In this case, Netflix definitely has the budget to do that. They've been cranking out shows and specials for years now.

I don't see Copperfield doing any more TV specials. Even though he's the most successful magician of his time, that time may have passed and the public likely views him as yesterday's news. So my guess would be no.

Copperfield is at the top of his game. A new Special would be a monumental HIT!!!!! It would break all records ... He's a GIANT.. The media attention would dwarf all else....

He has been a success for quite some time. I'm not sure the public sees him as yesterdays news as he still is a money factory.

He's the must-see, like Wayne Newton was for a couple of decades. Young people will certainly go to the live show, but I'm not so sure about TV. |

I have no idea about Netflix. Heck even Netflix itself is having trouble LOL. So being a sensation on that medium may not be a big deal anyhow.
BUT I was saying that he is definitely still very relevant and makes a ton of money.

Yea but with the streaming services wars about to erupt into nastiness it is not certain Netflix is in such a good spot any more. Even NBC is getting into the streaming service game.
I have no doubt about what you're saying about those shows and them being stars. Ozark is also in that bunch as well as Lost in Space and so forth. The landscape is getting confusing!

I wouldn't hold my breath on that, Slim! It just looks like Copperfield is playing out the string at this point, coasting along with the Vegas residency and nothing else left to prove. He's already done it all. I'd be very surprised to see another TV special from him at this point whether on Broadcast or streaming.

Here is the official answer from the man himself from Forbes-
Don't expect to see Copperfield's work on streaming services like Netflix any time soon, the master of his craft, believes his illusions are best seen live at his nightly shows at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. "I love creating new things," Copperfield said. "My show, the current show is totally new magic. My new show is what I haven't done, you know what hasn't been done in magic. I do magic with spaceships. Well no one did magic with spaceships before. I do magic with dinosaurs, I do magic with time travel and aliens and telling stories in a different way. "I do it in the medium that I'm meant to do it in. Magic is supposed to be done live, right? You're supposed to see it in a live theater. Eventually little by little we'll put things on TV and all that, but right now my focus is to invent new technology and new things that I can do live on stage and an audience can see it live in Vegas every night, 15 shows a week, pretty amazing, no days off." https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottking/2......71764325 |
