O.K. - So I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer! But after years and years in magic I just came to the realization that there is no such thing as Real Impromptu Magic. I know that sounds strange but when you consider how many props or gimmicks are required for any "impromptu" effect, you can't really call it impromptu.
For instance, if I was walking down the street naked (as I am wont to do on occasion ) and another completely naked person (I know, I live in a really weird world) asked me to show him some magic, what could I do? There are no coins, no cards, no rubber bands - NOTHING!! So, it would seem that "impromptu" magic is simply magic that appears impromptu to the spectator. As magicians, we should be prepared to perform 24/7, so as to create the illusion of "impromptu magic". Now that I'm done, I'm going to put my clothes back on. Thank you for your time and attention.

Twisting Arm
Thumbs (Magic For Dummies) ACR in card magic Simple Coin Transpo Kneezy-Vanish Recap (Revisited) Voodoo Ash (greg wilson also has his version called Glossy Finish) The Dime and Penny Trick Do as I Do (card magic) and a whole lot more ;)
I would, however contest that there is in REALITY very little pportunity to perform what could actually be termed "close-up" magic.

*blushes a little bit*
*cough* well, another thing is that if you two naked people are in the forest, you can take two leaves, and do the "Two in the Hand" sponge ball effect with the leaves same way Blaine does it in his 2nd tv special..... *blushes some more...... starts getting goosebumps*

Teller said something about that on a tv special.
"What could you do if you were naked on the beach, what could you do?" Impromptu vs. improvised was a nice essay written by Mike Weber in his book Lifesavers. Well worth looking fo when youwant, 'impromptu' magic. |

The entire contents of the book Body Magic by John Fisher would do just fine. It's all about kinesthetic magic and physiological tricks. Out of print, but sometimes available if you search hard enough.
Hope this helps! Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

Not sure of the correct name, but what about the hand twisting effect, not the arm twister but the one where you get the audience turn their hands palm out, clasp their hands together (you know the one I'm talking about or stretching the thumb. Snapping the knuckles by clicking you ringers. Old eye in the mouth trick (using your tounge). Someone said belducci right. Grey Elephant from Denmark. Pulling off the thumb is cool if you do it right. How about the one where you put too fingers on their closed eyes and then smack the back of their head. I don't know the names of half of this stuff but it truly is NO PROPS or objects magic!!!

I'd do the old "Invisible Thumbscrews" trick where the spec clasps their hands together with forefingers straight out and it looks like you're making the specator's fingers move to touch each other by themselves - against the spec's will.
This can be very powerful. But your main point is correct - ALL performance magic requires some sort of advance preparation in the form of study, skill, arcane knowledge, etc. Like with jazz music, it's precisely the extensive preparation (and the discipline it implies) that allows us to create the illusion of spontaneity, of being able to do magic at any time and any place. It also allows us to create truly spontaneously magical moments when we encounter a situation into which the magic can flow naturally, without being forced. The more "impromptu" magic you learn, the more you (and your audiences) will realize that the magic is in you, not the props. |

Some fun suggestions here, but I'm not convinced that it's possible to do Twisting Arm in the nuddy. However, should I ever find myself doing a gig on a nudist beach, I now feel comfortable that I won't be stuck for something to do. Ah-hem.
