Any suggestions for an equivalent to catgut? - specifically, for use in construction of the Dual Control gimmick as explained in Tarbell 7.
I actually have some gut around (banjo strings) but it's way too thick to use in such a gimmick. |

My first thought would be 4- or 6-pound test monofilament fishing line.

My first thought too.
Don't have it too thin or it will be uncomfortable to use. Riley |

You can use the invisible thread sold at fabric stores. Or as suggested clear finshing line. K-Mart sold clear line every spring. Usually 10 # was the lightest and would work fine.
As the gimmick is never seen, unless you are attempting the rising card effect, it really does not matter for the cling effect. You failed to say what you were doing with the gimmick so we are at a handicap in correct advice. |

Just thought, but what about the clear weed whip line?

Thanks for the suggestions!
I was thinking primarily of making up a DC gimmick to do the Alan Alan Rising Cards - I was wondering if there was some particular quality that gut has that accounts for it being specified in this context. I know sometimes it's suggested in older books because that's all they had, but Tarbell Seven isn't that old - I'm pretty sure they had nylon by then! |

I think gut was used then because there was no monofilament.

If the gimmick isn't seen, go check out the fishing line sold in stores as "Spyder" line. It is very small and you can get it in some pretty strong guages. I believe it's available in non-reflective, dark colors.
