No Idea where to post this....
I have been asked to do magic at a gender reveal party where my final trick would be the blue/pink reveal. Has anyone done this in a way you were happy with? Or have ideas? I have a few starter ideas, but I'll steal a great one from you if you'll let me! |

I have never done a gender reveal. But coincidentally Joseph Franklin did a mini-talk on his experiences with gender reveals in our last IBM Ring 56 meeting. One of his key points is if the parents-to-be have tipped off the group then from the start they are going to be obssessing at start of act waiting for moment. So best to tell them upfront to sit back and enjoy the show and you will tell them when the special moment will be. If the parents to be havent tipped them off, then you can do normal act but when that time comes in the act you might want to pause and let them know you will reveal something important and someone may want to record it. From his experience these recordings go viral with family and friends.
Regarding routine, Joe used a great card routine with a final reveal with 'its', 'a', and 'boy/girl' written on three blank cards. If I were to do one today I would use same idea with a modified version of Diamond Jack. At the end where "two hearts beat as one" I would add "But the story doesn't end there... Just like [name of expectant parents] soon the two hearts bacame three" (visibly change 2 of hearts to 3 of hearts) "and ITS - A - [GIRL/BOY]!". If jumbo cards were being used, instead of the change I would just print out three pieces of card stock of jumbo size with a heart on one side of each and 'its','a', 'girl/boy' on the other sides. These would be taken out at the "soon two hearts became three" time showing each has a heart. Then just dramatically reveal the other sides one at a time. If you are not familiar with Diamond Jack see here for example: https://youtu.be/sVrhtX0liS4 |

OK. I think I'm going with this:
I pass out blank cards to everyone there (40ish) and ask them to write a letter of the alphabet, Wheel of Fortune style (stay away from Q,X,Z etc..). Collect the cards and have the mother-and-father-to-be select 10 and place them in my Amazebox. Dump out those cards to see they spell out ITS A BOY/GIRL. Thoughts? |

Hi MarveriQ
I'm assuming that as well as delivering the message you also want this to look magically strong? If this is the case I hope you don't mind some tough love because I would suggest what you are proposing is, to be very generous, rather poor. An Amazebox is a great tool for allowing you to make a selection from a number of possible options. However, here you are suggesting having the 10 papers, that have been selected from say 40, placed into a box... only to then tip them back out! Is there any rationale behind having these selected cards placed into the box? From the written description of what you propose doing I can't see one. Unmotivated actions that exist in a routine purely to serve a method will inevitably result in poor magic. My suggestion is to think again and do something different. I genuinely hope this helps and is useful. Here's an alternative idea... I don't think it's quite right but it could be effective. Select a version of Out Of This World where all the cards of the same type end up together (i.e. not a version where the cards change half way through the two piles that get revealed at the end) ... Have a deck with; 'boy' cards and 'girl' cards. The people at the event each take turns deciding, sight unseen, whether the next card is correctly predicting the baby's sex/gender or not. At the end you reveal that every single person has picked the same sex/gender card as everyone else and it's then confirmed that everyone was right as that is the sex/gender.

Love it.
If I was afraid of "Tough Love", I wouldn't have asked. (the 10 wouldn't be dumped in together and then dumped back out, but drawn one at a time from different people (grandparents?) who collected and are then holding cards). But I wasn't in love with it and I recognize your critique. I am struggling somewhat, and not getting much feedback, so I appreciate you taking the time! |

MaveriQ, what is the party size? Is this close-up or parlour/platform conditions?

Joe's routine with cards was for restauant close-up, not a group that size. Diamond Jack with jumbo cards would still work but not sure about other card ideas.
I've used Duke's Dye Version with a customized message on the paper as a closer on many occasions. It could work. Basically do a typical routine but say the "different color handkerchiefs will change revealing a very special message. What do you think, pink or blue?" Then surprise everyone with the large streamer. But when you open paper the inside is pink or blue with "It's a girl/boy" written on it. See here for a nice performance by Marty Hahne: https://youtu.be/Kfoy9zyQOXk Another one is a newspaper tear. After the flash restoration you say "did you notice the big news inside?" And one page has a glued sheet on it with "It's a girl/boy". |
