Many a happy Saturday afternoon was spent at Irelands, 109 N. Dearborn St. in Chicago. That trip would include a visit to the Treasure Chest (of Marlo fame),
National Magic, the Magic Round table (Chic Shoke, Dorny, et al), and the Magic counter at Marshall Fields. |

Julie, Do you remember Lee Wayne who worked at Irelands?
It's never the wand, it's always the magician

Or, if you were visiting the Treasure Chest in the mid-70's a rather strange little guy with a beard who worked there at the same time that "Jaws" was playing at the theater on the corner?
That would have been me! Lee Darrow, C.H.

How 'bout late 50's early 60's?
I do not remember the Lee Wayne persona, but there were a couple of "Waynes" in the Magic world of that era> Wayne Hinkel, Wayne Shumway (Jr. & Sr), Lewayne's (or Lewains?) House of Magic and others I just cannot shake out of the ol' grey matter at this moment. |

I definitely remember hitting the same circuit.
We would go downtown to see a first run movie (like James Bond Thunderball at the Oriental Theater)because in those days new movies only opened downtown. And we would make the rounds. Fields, Treasure Chest (that place was kinda seedy or scary to us, some tough characters in there, it wasn't just a magic shop), Elders Magic and the Round Table at lunch time. Chic, Dorny, George Johnson and so many others there. I remember Lee Wayne very well, I even have a Magic Inc catalog with him on the cover, but I remember him from the Lincoln Ave Magic Inc shop. I never knew the National Magic Shop you mention. |

Does anyone have or know where I can purchase an Ireland's catalog from the mid 1950's?
