Is anyone able to write a review of the effect called Perspex Prediction?
The description is broadly as follows: "The magician displays a transparent perspex plastic board. Six playing cards are attached to the board horizontally. The board is permanently numbered one through six next to the individual cards. Five of the numbers are eliminated by the audience's spoken choices. The card next to the remaining number is removed from the board and shown to perfectly match the performer's earlier prediction. All the cards are different and the full face and back of the cards are seen throughout the effect. " The bit that turned me off was where they also claim: "Perspex Prediction will fool the best of Mentalists and Magicians!" - somehow I don't always do so well when I buy effects that are targeted at fooling mentalists and magicians. Anyone actually bought this one (or seen it performed) and feel able to provide a review? Thanks. Matthew |

I think perhaps the reason they emphasize that it would fool magicians and mentalists is that there are other similar effects where you only show half the card, not the whole card. The message, I think, is that the people who are smiling knowingly to themselves and waiting for you to reveal half the not-chosen cards are going to drop their jaws when you reveal both halves of those cards simultaneously. I'm not sure that message is accurate, but I think that's what they're trying to convey. If I had my time back, I think that I would not purchase Perspex Prediction again. I kept the gaffs most carefully, encased in plastic and out of sunlight, and one of them spontaneously discoloured. Strike One. I wrote to Mak Magic, who distribute the effect, by e-mail and by fax, in hopes of getting advice on how to clean the card or in hopes they would sell me one gaff instead of having to re-purchase the entire effect. I was ignored. Strike Two. There is no Strike Three, but I'm still not sure I'd buy it again. I've gotten my best reaction from it not because of the effect but because I delay--convincingly, I'm told--the fact that my prediction was correct. I hope that helps. If not, feel free to PM me. Or wait for someone else, who's a little more experienced, to provide a review, I suppose.

Thanks for that - it doesn't sound as if it would be easy to adapt the effect then, perhaps to handle cards depicting famous people or famous works of art!

I bought this a couple weeks ago, and I think it's a great effect! The ad copy is very accurate. The gaffed cards are very clever in their construction. The spectator truly does pick one of six numbered playing cards displayed on a sturdy piece of perspex. The backs are to the spectator. You remove their card cleanly and easily from the perspex (cards are held in place by elastic bands). The board is turned around to show the faces of the remaining five cards, and they are all different. Then the spectator's totally freely chosen card is turned over, and it matches a written prediction made earlier and which has been in view the whole time.
I haven't yet performed this effect for friends yet, but I know it's going to be a "keeper". No sleight-of-hand is needed, it's easy, can be done relatively close-up, and is really baffling. I would highly recommend this effect! Hope this helps. |

Thanks for that, hoodrat.
What do you think of my idea about adapting the effect to use something other than ordinary playing cards? Would it be practical to have cards made up from a special pack e.g. of famous people? Matthew |

That is a GREAT idea! Instead of having six playing cards, one could have six miniature reproductions of famous works of art or pictures of six national landmarks! Great ideas! If and when you do purchase Perspex Prediction, you will see how the gaffed cards are constructed. It wasn't what I was expecting, and they seem to rather complicated. I don't know they would be easy to construct at home (probably not, actually). There is a guy who does make gaffed cards -- he is at http://www.cardsbymartin.com/ I've had him make some gaffed cards for me in the past. I don't know if he'd be able to make these particular kind of gaffs using pictures of famous paintings that you send him. Might be worth asking.....

OLD Thread I am re-awakening.....
I, too, really LIKE this prop & clever method. Sadly, since Neil "Cards By Martin" Lester is no longer with us...most any pro "gaff card-maker" can make the needed cards for you. Personally, I rely on: http://www.martinismagic.com ---Moxahalla |

This trick is a member of a group based on U.F. Grant's "Slate of Mind," which was an offshoot of an idea from "Dr." Stanley Jaks after which a great many variations followed. Many of them, including this Perspex one, are described in Spellbinder's "Evolutionary Slate of Mind" in his Mini-Mysteries Book 1. In that collection is included Spellbinder's own 2009 "Evolution" which is an impromptu version that can be done with any deck of cards, any type of borrowed playing cards, photos, postcards, theatre tickets, business cards and so on, and using any ordinary pad of paper to use for writing the prediction. If you want to perform this without using gaffed cards of any type, you might want to check out this version.
