After some extensive searching, I've yet to find a large magic manufacturer that makes a regular karate coin (e.g. just a flat coin, no "blown out" part). Did I miss one, or is this just the status quo?
I have one of the newer karate coins (with the blown out part), and while it looks great on the finger, it's quite tough to make it look good in #W grip. Does anyone know why the new design has become so dominant? |

Any of the coin manufacturers can make a coin with a hole in it, and can make the hole the exact size you want. I don't know if I ever saw that available commercially.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Welcome to the Café GC...
Doc is correct, you can get them made that way, just reach out to most any reputable coin craftsman. I actually made my own that way (flat) years ago with a Dremel. In the meantime, here'ya go... www.toddlassen.com/karate.htm

Thanks Marion. I'd love to buy some of Lassen's work, but I've never managed to get in touch with him (by phone or email).
I'm surprised that the commercial ones aren't flat. It seems so much more difficult to make than a simple hole. Were they intended for different sorts of tricks or? |

Well, the exploded ones became a real rage years ago, think I saw Roth doing something with it. 🤔 But to me the coin always appeared more as a sorta stunt than magicial. Just the same, they became popularized that way to a larger audience and customers...I remember a lot of kids were doing it. Sorta reminded me of when the Svengali Deck commercialized out to the larger public, or something like that.
Anyway, the flat version just sorta stayed in the shadows but always presented more as magical to me and quite a bit more given to use in stronger routine. Eric Jones’ “Tai Chi Penetration” take on Karate Coin is a great example, one of the best IMHO. 😊 I did a little routine with the flat karate coin myself (the one I made), 😉 Crimp Karate Koin. It was a fun & magical little routine to do on the spot for people. 😁 https://vinnymarini.com/index.php/produc......te-koin/

Great routine MB, I am pulling out my Karate coin again. Wow. Your crimp is the perfect move for this routine. I also agree, if you really did magic, wouldn't you just penetrate something cleanly? So I will have to bring out my flat Karate coin. I needed to be reminded.
A tip. IF you use a Karate coin with a m....t, or attracted to one, you can ditch it to a m..g... holdout. This really kills people . Just used it today for vanishes. The best sleight is great, but a great holdout for a clean ditch can create miracles. Just sayin! Thanks I needed your help to get me to pull it out of the drawer . hehe. |

That's a really slick routine. I love the acquitment of your right hand at the beginning (that made the actual coin penetration quite a surprise).

I prefer the "exploded" look as I can do a slow penetration - kind of like the way you can take a pre-bent coin and manipulate it to make it look like it's visibly bending as they watch.

Yes inigmntya: people like you make a great point and make us all collectors, needing both versions to be able to
do "it all". great point. |

Hey, thanks guys, glad you like my little version here.
I'm usually on the move here & there, and so the little routine works well for that. And happy you noticed the "acquitment," it has served me well in not having to ditch coins and still deliver some amazing magic that because of it, is very hard not to be amazed by. I made that coin long ago in a shop at work, still got it and do the routine just that way still to this day. The instantaneous plunge of the finger through the coin absolutely startles people, behind my open shows of the hand. And then the "healing" of the coin back to normal again (which I typically toss to the specs), just drives people crazy! I was happy to share this with others and the routine is still available to all those that appreciate this little rocket-in-your-pocket. *Oh, and inigmntoya...nice go of it there...Really like the little rub-through of the finger through the coin. Anyway, thanks again for the fine recognition and appreciation.

Wow, I just came across this now...your routine looks great Marion!
To the point and looks like real magic, a worker. You have just inspired me to get out my old Karate coin, dust it off and put it to work |

These are easy enough to make with a drill press. Ive made quite a few and gave them away. Once you make the desired size hole, just use a dremmel tool to debur and smooth out the sharp edges. Then buff them out. You can get a dremmel set with everything you need for about 20 bucks. Its a very useful tool to have at home anyways. Just a thought.

I always thought doing the effect with a matchbook was better and somehow believable as well.
