Super Speller by Tom Craven in Semi-Automatic Card Tricks vol 1. Great spelling trick. If you use Simon Aronsons flash speller it’s possible to do this trick without the small set up needed in the original. I have changed the original routine a bit. Instead of the first spell I ask for a Magic Number from 10 to 15 and count this number. Then instead of Card Trick I spell Magic Word. Instead of yes or no for the third spell I ask them for a Magic Word and they can say any word as long as it spells with less than 18 letters. The rest of the routine is the same as the original unless you are doing it without a set up using Simons Flash speller in which case I ask them to help me by choosing a card from the rest of the deck and using that to spell to their selection in the packet.
I agree with MagicFish about his three choices above. Really really great mysteries. |

Thanks for that Stick. Students will recognize the Kaplan routine as the original Dead Reckoning. Not sure if Bannon ever mentioned him in DMF.
And thanks for sharing your work on Super Speller |

Hi MagicFish. Am I confused about Card Spelling Deluxe. I thought you meant the great trick from Encyclopaedia of Card Tricks that uses a bunch of dupes. It’s not much like dead reckoning though. Have I got the wrong trick. I like tricks you can do with a borrowed deck, but I think Card Spelling Deluxe (the one from Encyclopaedia) is well worth the four decks and time it takes to make up. It’s very impossible. I missed it In Encyclopaedia the first time round and got taken to school by Devin Knight performing his version of it. He fooled me badly. ü.

You are confused in a way.
You are right about the method (which I won't discuss here) and it first appeared in the Sphinx. I learned it from the Sphinx Golden Jubilee Book of Magic. I'm not surprised it is also in the encyclopedia. It is however nearly Identical to Dead Reckoning in that the spectator silently spells his card as the magician deals. |

Ahh. I see. Yes it is very similar in that respect. It’s a great trick anyway.
There is another really good speller in that old book 52 Amazing Card Tricks by Rufus Steele. It’s called The 10 of Diamonds and it is a really really cool trick. It will only work with the Ten of Diamonds. No other card in the deck will work. I have taken the basic idea that Rufus uses in his trick and combined it with the Eight Kings to make a really good spelling trick with a 1 in 10 chance of being a miracle. While trying to find the credit for this trick I just found another two good spellers. One of them is like the Mental Spell but with a larger bank of cards to choose from. It’s called Jiffy Speller. The other is called Psychic Spell and they are also in 52 Amazing Card Tricks. The Psychic spell relates to what you are talking about MagicFish with the spectator spelling out their card in their mind. |

I like that routine, but I never perform it because for some reason I find it difficult to remember which one goes where on the last one. It’s a great routine though. Do you perform it? Does it go down well? Maybe it’s worth another try.

Thought Stealer Rethought by Paul Gordon is also an effective mystery.
Here is my friend Rudy performing it. https://youtu.be/cp4PqAO-E4Q |

This thread is great. There are so many cool spelling tricks. Thanks for the ones above MagicFish. I love Rudy’s performance of Paul Gordon’s trick. Really really strong magic.. I have never seen it with a free selection before. I always F#@+£ the 7 of Hearts like Paul suggests. I like Rudy’s way much better. His timing with the script and moves were perfect. What a cool performer.

It's a pleasure to discuss spelling effects with others who enjoy them. I've always liked them, probably thanks to Harry Lorayne who taught me early on how strong they can be.

I don’t have this book anymore, but there is a trick in 5x5 Scotland by Peter Duffie. It is one of the last tricks in the book. It is a little like “Will The Cards Match” by Larry Becker, but it is so clean because the discard spelled cards are dealt face up. You Spell Magicians Names. At the end you have 8 pairs of cards. It’s a really good effect, but I thought that spelling Magicians names was a bit boring. I have never got round to scripting it, but I thought it would be funny to use this routine and spell ex girlfriends names and have a funny story for why each one left you. Just an idea.

That's a great one Jupiter 47. Thank you. It reminds me of JC Wagners version in Full Metal Jacket Called lie detector 2. The only real difference is that instead of the cut at the end the card is spelled to in a very clever way.
I thought of another couple of routines. Woody Aragons Rosary Spell and related to that Stebbin Out on page 140 of Semi-Automatic Card Tricks vol 3. I think this last one is one of the best spelling trick ever invented. Not only is it completely discombobulating it also leaves you in perfect Stebbins order at the end. Brilliant. One of the best spelling tricks with a set up I should say. I think impromptu Jim Steinmeyers 9 Card Trick is one of the best. |

I always had a soft spot for Gray's Spelling Trick, one of two spelling tricks I used to do with some regularity. Don't leave out the "demonstration phase", which makes the trick so much better.
The other one is "The Miracle Speller", one of the best spelling tricks I have ever come across. One reason is, that due to the premise of the piece, the spelling procedure is properly motivated. The trick makes sense. Furthermore, everything appears very fair and convincing. As it is so often the case with many of the really great tricks, it doesn't read like much, but you'll never know how strong this is, unless you try it on a nice person. You'll find it in Annemann's "Full Deck of Impromptu Card Tricks" or in the Dover book "Annemann's Card Magic", a bound reprint of "Full Deck of Impromptu Card Tricks" and "Miracles of Card Magic". |
