Considering that the tech and concept are all there. This could have been phenomenal. Instead, the creators used the cheapest materials available, produced an effect in mass and sold it at a very high price knowing it was crap.

This could have been a great effect, and I would have paid twice as much for it, if it had been built in a genuine Zippo and functioned as advertised.

Based on your experience, would you say that doing so would be complicated and/or very expensive?

Difficulty level would be dependent upon your patience and small tool skills. As for expense, unless you plan to mass produce you would probably be better to buy the original, take it apart, use the electronics, replace the switch with something more substantial, and adapt that for a real Zippo case. As an effect, I'd say it would take too much time, effort, and money for me; but, as a challenge I would do it. Sadly, for probably less than $10-15 more the builder of this effect could have solved all of the problems with it, had a quality product and a good reputation going forth into the next project. As it is, I'll never buy anything from them because of shoddy past work.

In their defense I would say their goal was not a quality product for a professional or performing magician, who wold have paid the extra price for quality product, but to make something cheap they could sell for a good profit to the trickster or non professional and non performer, who would not paid the extra.

If you have ever had the bottom fall out of the coffin during the walk to the grave, you understand the effect saving a few dollars using shoddy labor and less expensive parts can have upon your business. I may have the House of Discount Funerals, but we don't cut corners on containers.

At least not anymore.
