This is one your audience is going to remember.
Here’s the description from Matt’s website: “The Outer Mind is happy to present our newest addition: 3-PLY! Effect: The performer takes the stage displaying a roll of the softest 3-ply toilet paper available from the local supermarket. The performer asks if anyone in the audience has yet to use the bathroom. Someone finally raises their hand in embarrassment, and we politely assume they need to wash their hands. Unrolling the toilet paper, it’s revealed there are random drawings on some of the individual sheets. We explain that the participant will bring the roll with them into the bathroom, tear off a single sheet of toilet paper with their chosen drawing, and put it in their pocket. They’re instructed to take all of the extra torn off toilet paper and discarded drawings and flush them down the toilet. This will remove all evidence of their doings, and make it impossible for anyone to go in and examine their leavings. When they return to the performance area looking much relieved, we ask them to focus on their chosen drawing. They never remove the piece of toilet paper from their pocket. With no questions asked, and under these impossible test conditions, the performer accurately duplicates their secretly chosen image! -No peeking whatsoever, not above or below a bathroom stall -No #1 ahead or #2 ahead -No gimmicks or special paper, other than the toilet paper variety -No forcing, or pushing your will upon others -No relaxing or strenuous fishing expeditions -Will work in any stinkin’ language 3-PLY is a 16-page PDF download” It does exactly as it says above. Talk about a memorable moment! Although you could do this in a stage show, I think this is better suited for a house party environment. It brings the performance space into something larger than just the living room or just the stage. It is a practical method with no DR. It works. I should also mention, the drawings are several sheets apart, so you can’t see any other drawings through the roll. You have to unroll a couple of layers before you get to the next drawing. Obviously, a big part of this is simply the comedy of the prop and the unusual nature of the way it is used. This alone will make it a memorable moment; the fact that you can do something practically “test conditions” which takes place in a bathroom stall is an added bonus. If you like the sound of the routine, you won’t be disappointed with the method. It is very clever and typical “K.I.S.S.” style as you would expect from Matt. It is available for $14.95 from: https://www.theoutermind.com/store/p6/3-......llo.html Madison |

It definitely isn’t suited for everyone. But at a house party, I could see it being the one people talk about.
Would I use it for the CEO at a corporate event? No. Would I use it at a frat house? Absolutely. Know your audience, and know your character. In the right circumstances and for the right character, it could be fun. Madison |

For sure, this won't be for everyone, which is why I was very honest in the description of what the effect is and what happens.
Though, I really have to laugh at magicians who won't even consider performing something that's unique and different. I would rather perform something that almost no one else is doing. You'll call this "sh*t" or "low level material" and then praise a new peek or impression device to perform the exact same drawing dupe with the exact same structure that's been done hundreds of times by hundreds of other magicians without a shred of originality. Now, back to your regularly scheduled star sign divinations, standard pin guesses, book tests, and every other classic that has been rehashed over and over. |

I mean for me it’s not about ingenuity or originality, it’s about what is entertaining. What will make my clients and their guests happy. And this does seem very funny and entertaining. Definitely not for everyone and every situation, but it sounds like it could play very well.

True, Dustin. Not everyone cares about performing effects that are different. They're happy to perform and master the same 5 effects for the rest of their lives, and I take no issue with this. But when people comment on a new concept without even knowing the full presentation, it's annoying, especially when everyone I've performed it for has been highly entertained...more so than other drawing dupes I've performed. I can guarantee if Derren performed this routine in one of his stage shows and had everyone laughing their ***es off, everyone would be on their knees thanking Derren for doing something original and funny.

It’s irrelevant to me whether Derren would perform it or not , I one million percent wouldn’t be thanking Derren for doing something different .
I optimise everything other than being a sheep but I won’t fix something that isn’t broken it’s as simple as that . Change your audience don’t serve up material just to be different when it’s quite clearly toilet . Lots of your other stuff is great but this is pure sewage imho Gaz 🙂 |

Until you've read and performed the routine for real people like I have, you have no clue what you're talking about, Gaz. Move along.

Thanks, Brent. Am I correct in assuming you're the Brent who actually purchased this routine? And I'm surprised with all the crappy puns in this thread that you didn't say it was a "warm release" ; p

I love the concept of this effect! And I also love the fact that its different and original! I would love to perform this in one of my mentalism theater shows but I'm still not totally sure if it can be adapted to this type of venue. Please keep releasing original material Matt!

Thanks for the compliments, Psy! It can totally work in a theater venue. In fact, when I created it, that's where I had originally imagined using it the most. I didn't teach the EXACT way that I would use it in this environment, but the routine I cover in the book will totally work in a theater, and is explained from this perspective. I've found I'm using it at house parties more often, as that's where I typically perform, and it's been one of my most memorable and talked about routines.

I like this concept a lot. My wife and I host parties in our home and I know our guests would get a big kick out of this. Kind of reminds me of something that Andy from The Jerx would come up with.
I'm not sure I would send them into the bathroom and all that but I like the idea of tossing out a roll of TP and using that for them to make their selection. Maybe they have to go into the another room but maybe I could just turn around briefly or something. I don't know, just thinking out loud. Maybe it's best to commit 100% and do the whole send them into the bathroom bit. If that is the case I would kind of like to add something else to the effect. I like the idea of sending 2 people in together, it just seems like a funny situation and one person does this and the other does something else TBD. I love that Matt is a creative genius and then it gets me thinking in different directions too. |

I prefer to commit to having them go into the bathroom, just because it makes the most logical sense and changes the typical structure of a magic performance. I also really enjoy the whole procedure of flushing away the evidence. With that said, I love to see people taking a routine and making it their own. I like your idea of sending two people into the bathroom together. Please feel free to ignore all of my advice and perform it however you want, but I can't guarantee the same results.
