Yesterday NWL announced that is has signed a definitieve agreement to sell the USPCC to the Cartamundi Group. Cartamundi is Latin for “Cards for the World” with a history dating back to 1765! If I'm not mistaken last year Ellusionist already switched to Cartamundi instead of USPCC.

So how will this affect the quality of decks?

Big news. I hope this is not the end of Bikes as we know them.

I hope Cartamundi leaves well enough alone.

Time will tell. When companies buy other companies they typically begin by saying it will be "business as usual" and that they will be hands-off. Some companies are acquired and all hell breaks loose and everything changes. I think in time it will be in-between business as usual and all hell breaking loose. There may be some changes, but most will be internal and the public will never know.

Let's hope the joining of the two companies is a net positive for both!

What I'm afraid of is they already have a deck for magicians Copag 310's and Bicycle card will be produced for just playing and quality will suffer.

Ellusionist switched several designs to Cartimundi but not all of them. We'll see how it plays out with this as things settle down.

Personally, and I think this was mentioned in another thread here on the Café - I think the smartest thing Cartimundi could do is continue with the USPCC exactly as it is (With developments as technology increases, of course). That way they get profits from those who prefer USPCC's stock and finish, as well as those who prefer the offerings from Cartimundi.

As a business, I would think they know who their bigger consumers are (Casinos, magicians, serious card players...) and won't make any "major" changes. However, we may finally have a chance at getting some great gaffs both reprinted or designed due to the fact "THEY" might not be so "in love" with the trademark back design not being altered. I hope they are more lenient toward magic creators and magic companies reasons for making subtle changes.

I don't think the "standard" Walmart decks quality can suffer much more than in recent times. Smile

It was my understanding that the tightening the rules on what constituted an alteration of USPCC's copyrighted designs was so that they could effectively fight counterfeiters.

Basically, and I'm happy to be corrected on this if needed, a copyright is only as good as the efforts to protect it. If they allow someone to print minor changes without complaint, it becomes very difficult to fight those who straight up rip off the design.

So I'm not sure if that will change any time soon.

In many cases, the acquisition of a company has the benefit of a sort of reverse research and development. Meaning that it is probably more likely that USPCC time-tested trade secrets become more integrated into the Cartimundi lines. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of USPCC print designs and lines dropped (like some of those that are printed for special vendors like Stud is for Walgreen's). I can see them cutting down the special collector's prints drastically as well. USPCC prints a lot of cards that just sit on store racks. Cartimundi will likely tighten the proverbial 'belt' at USPCC and focus on production of staple brands. What good is an acquired company that doesn't make big bucks for the new owner?

I don't see Bicycles and Bees going out of use for magician's... or turning to Chinese manufactured home-game quality any time soon. I think it's more likely that USPCC manufactures will get Cartimundi design and branding, and that's a benefit to the acquisition.

Toward the bottom of Cartamundi's webpage at https://copag310.com they show a box containing Bees, Bikes and Tally-Hos with the slogan "One group. One team." Maybe it's a sign that they will not tinker with the old standards.

According to Wikipedia, Cartamundi was founded in 1970. I have no use for any of these specialty decks, but I did buy a pack of regular looking Cartamundi branded cards from a Barnes & Noble about ten years ago. They were poop.

The store shelf Cartamundi cards are relatively 'junk' for magic. They are thick and the corners aren't uniform. USPCC outsources some relative 'junk' as well (Maverick), as a super cheap alternative to their regular store shelf cards (Bikes). But Cartamundi does make very nice specialized cards (that you have to pay for). The difference, I think is that USPCC regular use (and affordable) store shelf cards are printed and cut uniformly and absolutely well-suited to magic (even without all of the dubiously marketed stock upgrades, special cuts and flashy designs that you can get from them).

In short, to get Cartamundi cards that are on the level of an $11.00 4 pack (black/red) Walmart Bicycle value deal... you have to order them and pay nearly twice the price per pack.

This is why I think the acquisition of USPCC is GOOD for Cartimundi and probably good for USPCC. I think it will be like General Motors dumping Pontiac and Saturn branding to improve economical stability. Forcing the company to focus on production of the items that actually make them money (Standard Bicycle, Bee, Aviator, etc.)

I don't think that we will see Bicycle being printed on "Ace" Cartimundi stock, if that's what people are worried about.

Thanks for the overview. I'll bet the acquisition of USPCC is good for Cartamundi, but will it be good for consumers? What's good for General Motors is not necessarily good for America. All things being equal, I'd prefer more competition. As far as I know, USPCC was not a terribly managed company, but I know little about them and, clearly, less about Cartamundi.

I would like to see some statistics to back up the contention within the video. I have a very hard time believing that even with the explosion of new cards over the last decade or so that Magicians really buy more cards than casinos. I don't believe that for a minute. But I am prepared to be schooled. Does anyone have data to support one side or the other?
