I'm curious: What types of effects/sleights do you NOT enjoy performing?
Since I know it can be a taboo question to answer, I'll go first: Generally speaking, I don't enjoy performing ace assembly routines or any effect that begins with a spectator peek. I know, I know - I'm "selling myself short." And yes, I do occasionally utilize the spectator peek and perform a variation of the ace assembly. But after nearly 20 years of being a worker, I usually "selfishly" exclude ace assembly routines and spectator peeks from my routines. I guess if I wanted to get theoretical, I'd argue that I perform for my own selfish satisfaction just as much as the interests of my spectator -- and these 2 things rarely find it into my repertoire. Okay, your go... |

I find nothing wrong with avoiding either effects or sleights that you don't like. Your job as an entertainer is to entertain but it should also be fun for you. Otherwise, I think it shows.

Are you performing effects and/or using sleights that you don’t enjoy? If so, why?

Sometimes you like the effect - but the only way to achieve it is to use a sleight you are uncomfortable with. Conversely I sometimes find myself performing a so so effect because it has a cool sleight.

Non-card tricks.

If you feel uneasy performing an effect or sleight , then don't do it , it will only mar the overall magical effect on your spectators

I don't perform spelling or oil and water tricks as I generally don't like the plots. However, there are some versions I do like (work that one out!), such as the David Williamson 'He who spelt it dealt it', Christopher Williams Oil & hot water.
While I appreciate the impact of 'do as I do' routines, I prefer a spec cuts to the.. or simillar, as I tend to do strolling with people who have been drinking or may be distracted. As for sleights, I don't like the second, center or bottom deal as I can't do them flawlessly |

I have no effects that I dislike, although I gravitate towards table top presentations.
I avoid passes and palming. I accomplish what I need through less risky, more reliable (for me) methods. I like forcing, using duplicates, stacks, crimps, peeks, dealing bottoms, an array of false shuffles and cuts... and I find that there are few things that I can't do with an underspread cull. |

I do not like performing card tricks that use gaffs. There are several reasons for this. First, I have to keep track of the gaffs, which I'd rather not do. Second, by the time I feel ready to perform a trick, the cards I practice with will feel old and sticky, and I like performing with fresh cards. Finally, as I generally only do tricks for friends and family, the gaffs won't be used much after I've done the trick that uses them. Some amazing tricks can be done with gaffed cards, so I have nothing against using them otherwise.

I'm not particularly keen on any tricks that involve spelling and or lots of counting. I prefer brevity when it comes to routines, although I don't mind something that's duration is more lengthy so long as the pay off at the end is worth the time to get there.

Agree with spelling and counting...with a caveat. Once you establish yourself they can work great. Look at Harry. He pulls them off after they already perceive him as the worst weasel card cheat ever.
They have their place. |

Good point Tortuga. They should be fun for you. Also, they should be fun and miraculous to the audience. For me at least.
People don't have the patience they used to have with card magic. When I am getting paid it has to be hard hitting. Not just puzzling. I can tell by their reactions. |

I agree that you your enjoyment of what you are doing shines through your work to the onlooker.
I disagree about spectators having less patience. |

Then you are not performing as a pro. that is how you learn what people will watch etc.

I performed as a semi-pro for years. Now I perform as an amateur.
I learned what people will watch ME do. What they will watch you do is different. It is the performer that is important- not the tricks. |

All depends on the performer.
A multiplying banana trick will bring the house down in the right hands. Think Steve Martin. Or maybe the Omni Deck would be better received if it were done by Eric Decamps or Bernard Bilis. Ever seen Harry Lorayne thrill a packed house with a magic square? Sure, some tricks have better qualities than others, but it is the performer that makes all the difference. |
