I'm just curious to know how many of you use this system. To be honest, this is just part of my whole cold reading thing. How about you?

It is useful to read...but can't say it is much of a cold reading resource.

Anabelle,
I'm curious about your perspective on the ethics of cold reading. I think some practitioners go too far if they take the tools of entertainment and asssume the role of therapists. It's awfully tempting to take that power trip. I tried it. I was at times successful, and I didn't feel good about it. fib |

Martin Breese's Commercial Cold Reading is the best learning material for cold reading. I don't use cold reading (cold reading makes you look like those scumbag TV psychics and frauds) but it's always good to know the basics so you can apply small aspects of it to your other effects.

Nikodini,
I resemble—and also resent—your broadbrush of all readers as "scumbag TV psychics and frauds." Sometimes readers in close-up situations can add an air of mystery, excitement and uplift to a performance situation, if they ethically present their materials. Problem is our society today has raised a lot of shut-eyes, the kind of people who will believe anything and—I cannot resist this one, LOL—even vote Republican on faith. Ian Rowland's work on the subject is careful to point out that many good salesmen are good "cold readers." Analysts (personal, weather or stock) use many of the same techniques. And I know some readers are able to lift people from a daily grind depression with a simple tea leaf reading (a la Paul Albestat) or a gloomy mood with Palmistry (John Riggs) as fast as it takes a James Randi or Rick Maue to debunk an unethical reader—in fact—even faster. Is that not the purpose of entertainment??? Good cold reading takes great memory and great observational skills of dress, body language, breathing and verbal hit hints to be efficacious. That is a lot of work that too many bad performers try to avoid, like others think that turning down the lights on their dancing cane actually hides the st--ng. GC

I haven't read it. I only read Ian Rowland's book and there's some material by Webster and Nelson on order. I expect a lot from these books.
A friend of mine called Completely Cold the worst buy ever, and since I was disappointed by Kentonism I didn't feel the inclination to buy CC. But, Anabelle, I was just wondering. If you say that Completely Cold is only a part of your cold reading arsenal, then... what are your other "arms"?

I didn’t think much to it at all as I was already using this and aware of it from NLP. If the only thing you use is CC in a 15/30 minute reading it's going to be pretty thin on the ground to your client. It's like a droplet of NLP spun out to make money from mentalists/magicians IMHO.
Better to go to the source, buy Advanced Language Patterns Mastery by Larry McLauchlin and learn more than using AND to string positives together and BUT to negate. Fullfacts, The Dance, following my own impressions, the reading systems themselves and developing my own systems are amongst what really improved my cold reading. Nick |

The best advice I can offer is to take no advice on readings (except this of course) from this forum.
Completely Cold is a fun little toy. It has nothing to do with giving readings. Giving readings has nothing to do with "arms". /Bamba |

At $40, Completely Cold makes for a very expensive liner for your hamster cage.
If you really want to learn about what it takes to present credible psychic readings, study basic psychology and sociology; familiarize yourself with a number of recognized divination systems; read the best material (i.e., Dewey, Webster, Kross, Riggs, Martin, Henderson); and study Gail Sheehy's Passages series. I have posted before concerning this pamphlet and I still stand by it today:

...the techniques mentioned in Completely Cold are the only methods I use for Cold reading some of the reactions that I have seen in people have been tears, giddieness & shaking after I have given them a reading with that material. I do readings very sparingly or in conjunction with an effect to enhance it. I am not a full or even part time reader... Tom |

And some people are prone to tears, giddiness & shaking. Seriously though Tom, maybe you underestimate your own effectiveness in this regard?
Each to his own. Actually, I’m quite glad some people managed to get something out of it, other than Kenton that is. Nick |

When I do a reading it is done for entertainment purposes and I say that most of the time. The thing is that if someone believes, you can tell them whatever you want and they will go on believing. So my theory is that you have to be careful in what you say and how you say it.
I know how to read tarot cards, I've been doing it for a while, so most of the time I don't use any system at all, but when I don't have my cards, I have memorized a few scripts that work great, and with that, I use some of what is included in completely cold. It works for me, though I've never tried completely cold alone. Like I wrote up there, I was wondering how you guys felt about it. Anabelle |

Annabelle,
Ian's book is an excellent reference. I never thought he intended it to be an "end-all" cold reading "method." I believe it was intended to contribute a summary reference to those in the field or wishing to enter the field. As astute as you are, you recognize that cold reading, like any of the tools of the intuitive arts, is not an end unto itself. It should be viewed as a tool for filling in the blanks that always occurs during a reading. The bottom line is to apply the techniques to your style of reading. Hope this helps.

Yes you are right to state that many people are prone to such behavior & maybe I do have a unique ability with doing cold reading I do not know. Let me share an experience I had when I first began doing readings. I was at work and a coworker wanted to share her horoscope with me, so I allowed her. I then stated that I could do far better & then did. Afterwards she was visibly shaken and stunned that I could know so much about her. Shortly after that I started to get blasted with emails of others wanting the same thing, I gave a few with very good results. Later I thought about the day's events & I quickly decided that I did not wish to delve further into what I studied.I made a concious effort then to use it strictly to add to the presentation of an effect which I continue to do. I looked at other cold reading manuals & CC just seemed to work for me, I will admit though, I do occasionally fall to that dark side & provide a straight reading.

Lately I have been using the I Ching and Brad Henderons the dance. The images are vague but beautiful enough to get the client make connection on their own.
Recently a young lady came to me for a reading. In talking to her, I immediatly spoke to her about seeking therapy or seek a trained counsler. She was coming out of a violent relationship and didn't want to hear anybodys advice. BUT she would love to listen to the coins and see what THEY had to say. (dont understand someone will not seek a honest answer from someone they can see but seek a supernatural answers they can not see) I simply read the coins and let her give her self advice.....(what images would that mean?) then said the coins said to seek professional help. she was impressed with the reading so much she said she would seek help. I don't know if you will brand me as unethical or dangerous. but I didn't want to chase her off to someone that would have harmed her. JudgeBean |

If I don't want to think too much I use the CC-System.
Otherwise I use a lot from Wonder Readings - very nice book. |

Still I'd like to know what it means.
It's not nice to read something, written in a language you ought to know, and have no clue what it means. I should blame my English teacher I'm definitely confused (and laughing) amens |
