Just arrived in Australia (that's quick!) and first impressions are stellar. Not just one of the most beautiful magic books I've seen, one of the nicest looking books full stop.

Nathan, when I have a big book to chew through I sometimes put little post it notes in to remind me where to look when I come back to it - that or fold the corners down on the pages. I figured you might not want to fold the corners so preorders got a little post it thingy.

I got mine in Italy and I don't usually write here but this time I felt the urge to do it.
In a time when mentalism publications are so... insubstantial... when even renowned performers and personalities put out there poorly curated material or, worse, overpriced ebooks ridden with grammar mistakes and horrific format... we got this.
This is literally a THING of beauty, a volume to place proudly on the special shelf. Applause and praise to Phill.

How much of the material is surefire?

Sleepy, everything I've read so far is surefire. I've been flipping back and forth through the book. Haven't hit a dud yet.

There's also a bunch of nice extras in there - I've stumbled across a few digital freebies and other stuff so far.

The production quality and clarity of writing[1] is off the charts. I didn't own any of Phill's other material, other than his Penguin Live lecture, so this was a great way to get across his whole body of work.

Phill should publish the table of contents somewhere - it gives a really good idea of what you get for your investment.

[1] It could have been better proofed - I've caught a few things so far that are typos or just ungrammatical sentences.

Thanks for your comments Morganjj, I'm glad you've not hit any of the duds yet, lol - I'll put the contents up somewhere convenient then post the link.

I've no doubt that there are a few sneaky typos in there, I've tried my hardest but I know there will always be a few that make it through the net - I hope it's not too distracting or intrusive. Similarly ungrammatical sentences: I try and write in an accessible conversational way which does sometimes mean dropping into vernacular or splitting a few infinitives, but also probably means just writing a few clunkers sometimes - again I hope it doesn't get in the way of the material too much.

OK it's really late and I'm not on my main machine so this might look a bit clunky but here's a brief outline of EVERYTHING that's in the book pretty much:

Surprised not to see more people talking about this. I've done my first pass read through now and it's all great stuff. Here's my notes for anyone on the fence.

Most everything presented is very much in Phill's style - which is to say, it's well (and funnily) written, plotting is very very well thought out, and the effects are clever and solid. There's a bunch of original pieces in here, but much of it stands upon the shoulders of giants as well it should. Where Phill is working off existing stuff, he explains his improvements and thinking well.

There is almost zero dual reality, instant stooging, or cold reading style stuff in here. The vast majority depends on you knowing something the audience doesn't, that will allow you to convey a miracle.

Also, most of it is as simple as possible and no simpler. Phill understands design (the book is beautiful!) and approaches his presentations and techniques with a designers eye. Everything fits cleverly together.

Most of the material you could practice and present without too much difficulty, although a few pieces depend on mental maths or mnemonics.

There's a decent section on cards (which includes the Passport to Alphas and Passport to Marked Cards material) which is a plus for me, but might not work for others.

It's a big book, and as I noted above there's no duds here. Which means no matter what you're after you'll find good work. There's propless stuff, PA, lots of essays on important considerations in prepraring and presenting your work, some clever premises, some stupid stuff, some gags, some deeply heavy mentalism that can change lives, some gags, some utilities ... Phill is a real thinker, and this is an amazing compendium.

I can't see how you could own this and not be discovering and using new things for years to come.

Phill is a clever guy with a lovely sense of design.

I just had to jump at the chance to have the best of his work wrapped up in one gorgeous package. But it also means I am sitting on the material for now (since I have already studied a lot of it), until I get the urge to dive back in and go over Phill's work again.

So - I don't really have any reviews to share at the moment!

Hi there's a few problems with the site which is just great because I'm on holiday away from the battlestation so I can't do anything about it. If you send me an email with the link that is causing trouble I'll sort it when I get back.

Morning Tim, it was great to meet you at Magic Live - I hope you are recovering from Vegas, I'm ruined with jet lag still! It was really nice being able to show people the project face to face at the convention, I wish we'd been able to bring a few more copies over but they are so huge it would have been insanely expensive. As it is, the shipping back was bafflingly pricy: we shipped a bunch of stuff to Magic Live with UPS from the UK, and when it was time to ship the remnants back from Vegas after the convention had finished, UPS quoted us a price that was SIX TIMES what we had paid to ship to the US. I still can't get my head around it. That's off topic but I'm still deeply puzzled. That's Vegas though I guess!

Quick note: a couple of people had issues with the resources page - this is working fine now after I wrastled the internet into submission last night. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Really wonderful stuff, Phill. It’s clear you put a lot of time and effort into this beautiful project.
