Hi Magicians,
There's some great tricks that involve starting with the bottom card of the deck secretly face-up. I'd like to turn the card face-up secretly in front of the spectators rather than prepare the deck in advance, but I'd like to do it with an easy sleight. There's a recent thread on reversals, but I'm specifically asking about the Braue Reversal. The Braue Reversal is easy, and at first glance it would seem that you could reverse the bottom card by starting with the deck *face up* and performing Braue. But -- in the trick I have in mind (I forget its name, but it's a Walter Gibson trick in Annemann) the reversed card on the bottom is supposed to be the chosen card; unfortunately, the spectator will already have seen that card during the "face-up" Braue Reversal. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help! Bob |

How is the card chosen?

Thanks, K! Kind of you.
Steve, that's the one. I just reread it -- hadn't in a long time. It's quite a pretty trick. Spectator divides pack into two halves, and the magician and spectator turn their backs to each other and each chooses a card from her respective. Each puts the other's card into her half-deck. The deck is then mixed, and the magi ribbon spreads face down. Both selections are face-up in the spread. (That more or less answers your question, too, tltq.) It's the back-turning that makes me want to find some other way to reverse the bottom card. I haven't actually performed the trick, so maybe back-turning isn't a problem, but I always suspect that back-turning weakens a tricks's power. My ideas run way ahead of my card-handling skills; that's why I'm hoping for a simple sleight like Braue. Bob |

Hi again, everybody. Well, I *think* I may have solved my problem. After the spectator cuts the deck into two halves, and magi and spec. each take one half, instruct spec. to shuffle and cut her cards, and then lay one on the table. Meanwhile the magi is also mixing *her* cards (and later placing one on the table)-- but what she's really doing is the Braue Reversal, face-up. The spectator won't see what the magi is doing, because (1) spec. is focusing on fixing her own cards and (2) magi *appears* to be mixing her cards too -- but with the cards facing her so that spec. can't see the face-up card that will later seem to be magi's chosen card. I even thought of ending having magi end with a Halo cut, thus doing more cutting, but keeping the reversed card on the bottom.
So now my question is: first, after practice, can I do the B. Reversal fast and smoothly enough that the spec doesn't may attention to what I'm doing, and second, would the idea work in practice. The obvious answer to the second question is, *try it*! In the meantime, I'd be curious to hear what people think of my ideas -- if you were able to follow them! Anyway, I'm pretty excited about this, but feel free to rain on my parade if necessary. |

I assume you don't want you and the spectator to put the cards behind the back since putting the cards behind the back will cover the reversal.
I wouldn't worry about doing the Braue Reversal if the top card is not memorable. If the top card is the four of diamonds, chances are by time you get to the end of the trick on onlookers will not remember seeing it earlier. But if the top card is ace of spades, they probably will. |

Good point about Braue, tltq. Thanks.
