Mentioned this in another thread but not how it was originally used. For several years I worked a restaurant/bar which had candles on tables. I developed a gag with a matchbook and lighter to build rapport with guests without saying I was a magician.
What you do is take the striker strip off a match booklet and glue it on side of a lighter. When you approach table you say "Management sent me over to help set the ambiance." Then take out matchbook and try and fail to light candle with match a few times. Some people will be sympathetic (usually woman of a couple). Kids will find it funny with a little hamming it up. In end you state "Don't worry, I have a lighter". Take out lighter, show it, and strike match on side. This totally surprises people and they will laugh. Then state you are the brief entertainment for their night while they are waiting and go directly into act. For me it was copper-silver-brass and I would note how you can see the candle flame through the hole in the chinese coin to tie it together. It is only a 15 to 20 second gag but it was unusual and set the tone for my more whimsical act. |

Meir Yedid sold a lighter and when you would try to light it, would just spark spark. Made by Fantasio? Maybe?
You would slide the cover off of the lighter (Bic Lighter Design) takeout a wooden match and light it by using the striker on the bottom. I have one. I use to use it all the time to light Fantasio Candles. But I try to stay away from fire due to the rules and requests of customers and venues. When I was a bartender a long time ago, I use to use it to light lady/customers cigarettes. Pretty Funny.

This was a gag used by Senator Crandall in the early 1960's. He called it the never fail lighter.

In that case the lighter was supposed to be used by the spectator to burn the handkerchief the borrowed bill was wrapped in. But it too would only spark. Then he would grab the corner of hank and vanish the bill. It was found by breaking open the lighter. I am not sure what it is but your experience is like mine. People just find using a lighter to light matches as funny. |
