Looks like a good one if this is truly impromptu.
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/12177 "Dowsing Duplicates by Alexander Marsh is a great technique that can be used in a variety of ways. In the tutorial Alexander shows an actual stage performance with photo cards, then talks about using business cards, playing cards and questions cards to demonstrate the diversity of the principle. What I particularly liked was the ending he created which, after matching a couple of the cards individually, snaps into a quicker procedure to take care of all the other matches. It moves right along and doesn’t get boring. As Alexander points out, these instructions can be adapted by performers in many different ways. Given my own style of working, I immediately decided that I would perform this routine wearing a blindfold such as my own stainless steel blindfold, a folded cloth blindfold or just about any other type. I, personally think the effect would be greatly enhanced doing it that way. But this is the good thing about this tutorial; it gives you the leeway to think about the effect and decide how you want to use it based on where you perform and who your audience is. Rest assured, the method can be learned in just 10 minutes and it is easy to do so you can devote your concentration on presentation. Highly recommended." -Richard Osterlind "This is a very clever effect that gets a great reaction. There is nothing for the audience to discover because the entire secret is in your head! I really like this!" -Marc Paul "Terrific, fooled me’” And so many wonderful variations , it will keep me up for days just thinking of them. 5 stars" -Marc Salem Dowsing Duplicates by T.J. Osbourne is a psychometry routine with a difference. Using photos, borrowed business cards, playing cards, napkins, ESP cards or almost anything else you can think of; the mentalist is able to find the matching pairs amongst a sea of indifferent items. The classic effect is as follows: - 6 business cards are borrowed from members of the audience. - They are stacked and torn in half, producing 12 identical halves. - The half-cards are mixed and laid out on the table face down. - The mentalist impossibly finds each pair of cards, one after the other. This is a truly impressive feat, as there is no way that the cards could be marked, or secretly peeked. Until you activate T.J.'s brilliant method in your mind, you really don't know where each card lies! There are no difficult moves, nothing to be caught out on and the method works perfectly every single time. After delving deeper into the method, We discovered that this can also be applied to a prediction effect, using a game like "Cards Against Humanity" or other similar "pairing" games. Even though each pair of cards is chosen at random, your prediction shows that you knew exactly what would be paired with what. This method is something that you will carry with you for the rest of your days; as it lives only in your mind. After watching Alex's brilliant instruction, you will always have this secret ready to go at a moment's notice with no set up or special props required. |

So is it by T.J. Osbourne or Alexander Marsh, or is that the same person?

I think the original routine is from Syzygy by TJ Osbourne, but presented here by Alexander Marsh with his addition ideas.

I LOVE the simple and fabulously clever method behind this; it is fantastic for impromptu performances or any time you can borrow business cards. That said, I would NEVER use it for any kind of formal presentation in which the performer is providing your own cards, photos, boxes, envelopes, etc. That is because, as far as the audience is concerned, if the performer is providing their own material, then why not achieve the same effect using the much, much simpler "obvious" method (the method Alexander takes pains to show is NOT used here)? With the obvious method, you can even have the participant fairly shuffle the items and lay them out anyway they wish. I really hope I have missed something here and stand totally ready to be corrected.

Just picked this up and I rather quite like it. Nice and simple method. Alex has extended it beyond the cutting of business cards which opens many possibilities and different plots/variations (plus I know many performers don't like to tear their own business cards so this is great thing). Also, with a bit of further thought, you could come up with ways to make it even more fooling (i.e., eliminating the idea of there being an 'obvious' method at play). For example, you could perform this far away from the cards/photos (or blindfolded, with you back turned, etc) by simply asking the participant (or second participant) to turn the matching card for you. Overall, a nice little, impromptu effect.

The variability of presentation angles for this is what makes it a valuable tool to have at your disposal.

I say do the impromptu business card version and say that you pay so much attention to detail, you genuinely can spot the minute differences in the edges to be able to match them up...make a bit of a fuss of holding each segment up and studying the torn edges...then do the rest of the set up as normal...

You could (impromptu) draw 6 objects on your business cards and have the participant draw another 6 objects associated with the ones you drew (e.g., sun/moon, orange/apple, etc). After the set-up, the participants turns over one of the images. If it's one of your images, you take their wrist and find their matching image (apparently picking up on their energy or suchlike). If it's one of their images, they take your wrist and find your matching image. etc.
So many cool ideas can be done with this! Great stuff. - Ross

I really like this, so much more practical than another older and similar method involving more cards. Or perhaps, just less cumbersome. I tried this out with playing cards just to get started and it played very strongly. I can't wait to try pictures or drawings...

Yep, this is a great effect with lots of possibilities. I like that it can be done of the fly with no prep and the cards against humanity presentation is fun.

Big weak point: the spectator can not manipulate the cards. You must control the cards and they must be put in place. You have to know how to make a false mixture, which is not too difficult. But the fact that you manipulate the cards 100% of the time until they are placed on the table inevitably makes those who look like you know where the corresponding cards are. in advance, probably because they are marked in some way. The irony is that they are not marked at all.

Nonsense. You're just putting the cards down, nothing else... Its something everyone understands and can see is fair... Don't over prove things... They've already been mixed...

In practice, spectators don´t usually carry their cards. So, most of the time the effect will be done with the magician´s cards.
But that is no problem, as we have already discussed. I believe it can present blindfolded, long distance, covered by silk, and many other features. Very good... |

I've shown this around a few times now and have enjoyed really great reactions.
I'm using the symbol cards that came with Ben Blau's Unfazed - the five symbols that Eugene Burger used for his demo plus the double hearts from the third set of symbols. these are great cards because they're blank on the back and can't be obviously marked. After showing it to the president of the company I work for, he said what really bothered him was matching the cards "face down." so, that's a really effective sequence after the first two turnovers. Point is, real people (non-magicians) think this is an amazing demonstration. ~Oscar |
