I've tried several different led lights for stage shows, but they lack the lumens to truly light up the performer, even with
several of them - I even rented two large towers with leds and and a light controller. So for this stage that I was running, I added just two halogens - net result, SIGNIFICANTLY better with halogens. Has anyone here had better success with LEDs? Martini |

I should mention as many of you know, we need to be CLEARLY SEEN and heard - Visibility is imperative (essential);
especially for stage shows. Martini |

Aaron, LED's have come a LONG way from when I started using them, but they are still less efficient for the money than a traditional fixture. There are LED's that are very bright but they're a lot more expensive as well. As an example, a traditional ETC Source 4 instrument might be in the $500 range while the same instrument in an LED configuration would be in the $2000 to $3000 range and STILL not have as good of an output.
LED's are wonderful as they burn with a LOT less power and heat, you can color mix them in a variety of ways in a single fixture (RGB, RGBY, RGBW, Etc) You just need to understand that those benefits come at a cost. The other advantage of LED's is that they can usually be run from a regular power feed with DMX control and not require costly dimmer banks and 3 phase power. There are always trade offs. Many people see inexpensive LED fixtures and think they will replace traditionsl tungsten rigs that are tens of thousands of dollars. It just won't happen. If you do want to go with an LED rig that has a higher output, you'll need a professional fixture. ETC, Martin, Altman, Robe, even Chauvet & Elation do have fixtures that will do what you need, just at a much higher cost. The 12 Arri SkyPanels we used on our last commercial shoot were beautiful but around $30,000 each. Good luck on your search!

I did a show at the Beyondo Room and it was lit only with LEDs that were controlled through a Phillips iPhone app.
They weren't as bright as halogens, but the venue itself was quite dark and a little luminosity went a long way. What was nice though was the selection and programming of seemingly infinite color patterns. Each LED was independently adjustable through the full spectrum and the whole setup could be programmed on a timer or for cues. I actually really liked the setup as I was able to play with far more lighting cues than I had in the past. |

I’ll echo what Ray said. The Martin Aura (an led moving head wash) and Martin Quantum (moving head profile) are two different types of led fixtures that I absolutely love and have used on several designs. If you’re serious about purchasing lights, you may want to look at renting them first from a local production company and see how they work for you. The cheap usually comes out expensive!
To me buying a cheap knock-off lighting fixture is like buying a cheap illusion. |

Since I tend to work in small rooms and my requirements are simple, I use rechargeable LED work lights. It keeps people from tripping over cords and there's no danger of people getting burned. Large, hot lights just aren't practical for the small rooms. I especially like them when I can't park close to the venue and it's a hike to get to the room.
