In routined manipulation and finale L. Ganson teaches the back palming and fans productions. Are the same stuff in the Expert manipulation of p. cards book? Anyone who owns them both can point me if I need both sources? I have the routined manipulation books.

This question was asked a few months ago and 'no answer was the stern reply'! So on that basis I'll have a crack at it as Ganson is/was one of my favourite authors for learning magic from.
There's four books to mention here, namely:- 1. Expert Manipulation of Playing Cards, published by Arco just after the war in the 1940s 2. Routined Manipulation part 3 (I think it was part 3, the Finale, but I'm working from memory) 3. Card Magic by Manipulation (a booklet rather than a book) 4. Expert Manipulation of Playing Cards, as reprinted by Davenports some years back. The first book above came out when wartime rationing and economy restrictions were in place, consequently the quality of the paper and binding is not as good as the more recent reprint, but it does have the compensation of being complete. The Davenports reissue has new photos and is much better quality, it also contains a reprint of Dodson's Exhibition Card Fans. My only criticism is that for some reason a paragraph here and there from both the Ganson and Dodson sections have been omitted presumably due to carelessness in editing. However that doesn't negate the overall value of the book. The chapter in Routined Manipulations is entirely different from the EMPC book, there is inevitable overlap in contents but there is much new material in the original book. No.3 above is just a reprint of the relevant chapter in Routined Manips and adds nothing new. So is it worth having both? Only you can decide that I'm afraid. |
