Unfortunately, no it doesn't at all. A major announcement is being released from Gigimasters who is changing their business model from just a listing site for entertainers, to complete event and party planning services including venues, themes, catering, desserts, food trucks, bar and bartending services, staffing, decorations, balloons, baby showers, and many other types of vendors and services.

It is much more than just a name rebranding. It is completely changing and expanding their business services and platform (and pricing). As part of this, they are also, after 22 years, changing their name to The Bash!

I was curious to see how this sits with current GM members.

About a month ago Gigmaster's raised my subscriber fees from $198 per year to $456 per year. Combining that with paying $20 or more with every gig it pushed me into the 'not enough bang for my buck' territory. After 11 years of membership I quit. Maybe the substantial increase in fees are part of their redesign.

I posted on the GM thread already but here goes. They promised no change for members only they are changing the name and brand. I emailed them about what I thought about this. I first thought it was related to being so closely in line with GigSalad but they are changing a lot more it appears. I told them it was not a good name and I recommend anyone on GM let them know. GM has worked for me many years now. I am however not listed under magicians. I change category now and then just to test the waters. I will wait until my subscription runs out and see what direction I will take. Perhaps I will still get the SEO I had which is what I want anyways but how many professional corporations will look at the bash seriously? Look at all the other party event balloon popping vendors on line who fell apart. Kazoom is one that called me several times. I am just thankful The Bash is not my only source of SEO.

What's changing?
You will notice only two updates to the site next week:

New Logo: The GigMasters logo will be updated across the website.
New URL: All GigMasters URLs will automatically redirect to The Bash URLs.

Aside from the new name, logo, and URL, everything you know and love about GigMasters will remain the same. There will be no changes to your membership, to our service, or to our team. We are still very much dedicated and committed to your success.

How does this affect clients?
Nothing is changing with how clients can request or book our members. We will be contacting all clients that have used GigMasters to inform them about the name change and reassure them that nothing is changing about our service.

What’s next?
We will notify you as soon as the logo and URL have been updated next week. Additional changes like exclusively using “The Bash” across the site and in emails will be coming over the next several months. We’ll continue to keep you updated throughout this rebrand process.

Well, as long as it helps me Danny, I am happy for them. They said it will not affect me negatively. I have to trust them. I do not know one performer however who is happy with it. Time will tell.

While a few performers I've spoken to seem to feel this way, others are quite excited about the greater possibilities. They (GM/The Bash) are stepping up their marketing budget for the next couple of years to promote the new platform, and they are promoting it much more widerspread than just to the entertainment community. For sure Kids Parties....that's what I thought. Time will tell. I will keep paying and check the SEO. For that alone, it is worth it if I am listed in the category I compete in now.

Ummm... Maybe I don't know much about SEO (WINK WINK NOD NOD)

But they have CRAP SEO..
It's got a slight boost due to being a directory ... but to only have 1.2k top 10 listings with over 800k indexed pages... ummm NOT GOOD

Here is the kicker....

ONLY 13 Top 10 listings for anything related to MAGIC

When I was a full time entertainer I just kicked them off the 1st page for the market I wanted, and doing that is less than 6hrs of SEO work.

Is it a good thing to rely on a company like that sor your SEO work? I don't rely on it at all, but would imagine the first thing you would want is control. They can change rules on a whim and leave you out n the cold. Seems like a bad plan to me.

My experience with them, and the other similar sites, is that your listing (free or paid) swallows up your first page of Google search results. Prior to using them, I occupied 7 of the first 8 organic search results on the first page, with my location and magician as the keywords.

After experimenting with GigMasters, GigSalad, (as well as dalliances with MyPartyPlanner, Decidio and Eventective), my organic listings not only virtually disappeared from the first page and was replaced by theirs, but now, the company I was keeping on Google's search results were entertainers and processes I did not want to be associated with. I quit all of them, and not only did my organic results return, but the types of bookings and relative fees improved - dramatically.

Fascinating, no joke.

So it helped you NOT being involved.

I have always maintained that booking through places that encourage low ball offers often gets you low ball offers.

Though I know of a couple of guys who managed to maximize the process.

Interesting point of view. How much work and time do you put into SEO?

This probably deserves its own thread because its not related to The Bash as much as it is to a larger consideration of our industry. But I think your question is important and I want to answer it directly.

Initially, it required more time, but nowadays, not so much. As Ron Popeil would say - 'set it and forget it'. Within reason. Smile

SEO is a strange animal because its a field that has a fair amount of people best left alone. It reminds me of the earlier years of our discussions here, when gurus were popping up let and right, and they all seemed to be getting their chosen 'keywords' from the same YouTube videos or veteran gurus. And figuring out how to separate the wheat from the chaff in SEO is not as easy, in part because even the honest ones sound like the spammers and vice-versa. But also because the mysterious and elusive algorithms of Google have their origins in deep technology that only those that choose to study it earnestly can likely provide the results we're looking for.

In our Café, I've only met one person that appears to understand it on that level, and he happens to be in this thread.

About 7 years ago, I started looking for ways to improve mine. And there's LOTS of people that say they can help you with that problem. I still get 3-4 emails a day from "people" offering their SEO services. I think many of them are auto-generated from India and closer.

Because so many of them were promising the same things, and using the same "funnel" scenarios and language, some pitches just didn't smell right. So I set off trying to educate myself - not so much to try to do it myself (because of the knowledge required to get it right), but more to be able to make a wiser choice in hiring someone.

I started with researching locals companies that specialized in SEO, with great websites and testimonials, then tried companies with national footprints promising the same, and even looked at Fiverr and some of those unsolicited emails back then. I also spent money with experts in our own field that left me hesitant to trust anyone else. Many offered free reviews of my site (I use the WordPress platform) and I was impressed with the info several of them provided. They check a lot of different factors to arrive at their conclusions: keywords, page loading times, landing pages, social media integration, etc. And even details that most of us would never think of, but remain important. It was a good learning experience.

When it came time to implement, I realized two things:
1) It's not an inexpensive proposition. Many of the better companies charge thousands, and may be better suited to healthcare, legal and manufacturing companies, than to us lowly sole proprietorships.
2) You get what you pay for.

I started looking at what others on WordPress were using to help with SEO, and one name kept coming up - Yoast SEO. After reading a lot of reviews of others that were using it, I downloaded it. Its just a plugin that appears in your WordPress dashboard. It was easy to use and implement, and the results started showing up on Google.

Since then, Yoast has improved their user interface, and their results. I'm re-doing my entire site now, so I haven't tweaked it for about a year. But when the new site is done in a few weeks, I'll spend somewhere between 2-4 hours going through the site page by page in the Yoast interface, and just double check all my criteria. The plugin leads you through the process easily, and even helps you understand WHY you're doing what it says you should probably do. It's the secret ingredient for those that are trying to avoid spending thousands. And as you said earlier, it keeps control at my fingertips, where the results match the input. Finding a company that offers the same thing isn't as easy.

Once I've done that 2-4 hours, I'll just leave it alone for another year or two. Once in a while, I'll get an email from Yoast reminding me to check a page that needs updating, or a new change at Google that requires me to make a minor change though their interface, but it has been a no-brainer for me and thousands of other companies, big and small.

I do think that the people that stay up to date with their education from Google and other SEO related information providers can get your there as well. And maybe even better or faster, but there's that price to pay.

Very interesting thoughts and discoveries Keith.
I too have downloaded the Yeost SEO plug in. There is one expert in this thread who has dissed Yeost in another thread and suggests a different plug in. I did take a look at it, but I'm not smart enough to figure out the details. I do find the Yeost pretty helpful for me.
