New ****** cards from Diamond Jim and Phil Smith.
I like the look and back design. I'm having a little bit of a hard time getting into layperson brain though. To me, the ***** seem a little too obvious, but I of course know about these kinds of things and I have an idea where and what to look for. Curious what others might think. http://djtyler.com/product/diamond-playing-cards/?

I really like the back design on these cards. It took me a few minutes to see the markings for the aces of spades, I would love to see what a 10 would look like,i think it could look abit too obvious in my opinion.

It's kinda on the fence. Nice for easy reading from a distance, but I'm not sure these are as deceptive as DMCs.

IMHO, I feel that a m***** deck's back design should be as simple as possible due to the nature of the cards. With a design as eye-catching as seen on the Diamond Deck, I feel it begs for scrutiny, whether out of curiosity or appreciation.
Have yet to find a more deceptive deck than DMC. |

Love it. It took me a minute and I was only able to find the secret because I knew it was there somewhere and am familiar with DMC. This will probably replace my DMC deck since I cannot get the black any longer.

I love the look of these, is there any way to get them in the UK without crazy shipping charges?
It's almost impossible to tell how obvious the markings are when you already know what to look for, but they don't quite look as deceptive as DMC imho.. |

I think these are great...I found the marks eventually and think they are very well hidden but so easy to read. Remember to put your magicians brain away when you find them, this isn’t even on a layman’s radar if presented right. I have yet to hear of anyone who has had someone call them out on markings.
Well done all involved looks a great deck. M |

Hi guys, glad to see these pop up here. DJT had a really clear vision of the feeling he wanted for these and it was great to be able to put them to print - in terms of them being too obvious, when you have the cards in hand, and of course remembering that the lay people you are performing for don't (SHOULDN'T) know they are marked, the marks work perfectly. I've handed them to magicians who have looked for the marks and been unable to find them - remember that there is something quite beguiling about the physicality of a marked deck that means that what is obvious on screeen is often less so in person. I used them in a lecture recently and I was really pleased with how they worked out. If you're on the fence, all I can say is they are worth a punt (but I guess I would say that)

Dear readers,
My cards have done very well since their release. Much of that is in thanks to the designer Phill Smith who brought my vision to life. The second part is to Brian Brushwood who fell in love with them and promoted them on his show Scam Nation. Brian, his team, myself, and a master woodworker designed an awesome puzzle box using the artwork from the card. For more about the box and the cards see http://djtyler.com/product/black-diamond-puzzle-box-decks/ |

They look great but too expensive for everyday use. As a MD fanatic, I’ve got dozens and dozens of decks from the last 30 yrs. I get that they are special and warrant a bit of a premium price, but $20 is way too high, especially in this day and age. At most we should be in the $8-$10 range now especially with the great cards Penguin is producing. Just my opinion.

In my humble opinion I think that $20 is fair market price for a premium stock marked deck of cards. I can use one deck of cards for months, before retiring it. Then it becomes a deck that I use for signed card effects so that I might give away the cards. A month ago a lady who had seen me months before smilingly removed her signed card from her purse and said "I still have my lucky card!" The back of the card was toward me. She asked, "Do you remember my name?" Luckily I had heard someone say it just minutes before. I told her her name and said you picked the luckiest card in the deck, the Seven of Diamonds. She screamed with glee! Thank goodness they were marked.

Debating fair market value is always an interesting discussion. I go through one deck per show and I assume most other workers are the same. So I go through 50-65 decks per yr plus all my practice decks. So $20 per deck is out of the question. Years ago I switched to using marked decks exclusively so I switched to the Phoenix marked decks, which I still feel are the best MD’s, for $10 per deck. Then Penguin released it’s fantastic MD’s at $5 per deck. So even though I love the Phoenix decks, why would I pay $10 per deck when I can get the Penguin decks for $5. That said, even at $10 per, the Phoenix decks were cheap enough to use as an everyday deck. And as a result, I bought several hundred decks from them. At $20 a deck, I wouldn’t even buy one deck. So it ultimately comes down to the goal of the manufacturer. Do you want to sell very few decks at a high price, or do you want to price them so you generate a stream of repeat sales? Now that decks are so prevalent and so easy to produce, I don’t see why anyone would pay more than $10 for a deck ever. Those days are long gone.

I stocked up on Penguins MD and DMC Elites...I use these at gigs, but am a sucker for a good MD. I ordered one of Diamond Jim's a couple weeks ago and love it. I wont be ordering a brick any time soon, but certainly plan on picking up 2-3 more before Summer.
I totally get emyers99 perspective from a performers standpoint in that $20.00 per deck isn't practical, but as a collector these rank up there with the best. |
