Sorry about the hatline comment, I was very wrong about saying that. It's not 100000 hatline posts, I believe it's actually 1000002 hatline posts.

Illusionsfortheblind- You might want to check the advance option in the search box. I searched "Busking" in "The sidewalk shuffle" and the first 10 post where,

-Buskers burn out,
-Street theatre doc,
-Buskers pouch,

-Are street magicians looked down upon,

-Busking in San Fran,
-Knot, nut and rope,

Also we may talk about hatlines because a lot of people here rely on busking as a main income. And as result have a huge amount of experience and knowledge on the subject, and they are more then willing to share.

One day I was out busking I did 20min shows back to back for about 3hrs. It was a great day very busy crowds ahere in a great mood and I was getting some good hats. At the end of my last show I took the hat and then knelt down to pack up. As I was packing up a I heard a voice "excuse me"

I looked up and there was a young boy and he said "I watched your show and I really enjoyed it. But we have no money left from our day out"
He kind of gestured overe to his 2 grown ups and his two sisters.

I said "that is fine thank you for your comments"

His reply was "But my Mum checked the lunch bag and we only have this left, you can have it if you want?'
He was holding out a slightly melted and squashed Twix.

My heart melted. I said to him " you have no idea how much I love twix"

I just love the kindness and love in this story it was great moment.

I wasn't serious, I didn't mean for anyone to take it the wrong way. It was just meant to be a joke. It's good there's so much discussion on working the streets, there's always so much to talk about even, the advice on here is gold.

That would have "made MY day, too!

There was this guy down by Kroger’s yesterday,
just sittin’ on the curb pluckin’ a guitar –
‘cept it only had three strings and him
wearing gloves with his fingers sticking through,
but was middlin’ good fer al o’ that.

could a been old er young – couldn’t tell
though scraggly beard and cap pulled low,
but most tunes were from “way back” I guess,
for most folks gathered ‘round –
cause one guy shouted, “Can’t you do something else?”

this fella put his guitar down and flopped around
to get on his knees and grabbed this can
that was sitting on a stone and shook it
to prove it was sadly empty.

(you can’t openly solicit tips in Knoxville)

he performed a sort of Miser’s Dream
of catchin’ coins from strange places,
including bitin’ one to test its reality –
and pantomimed examining a bill.

all of these he pretended to drop in his can
and from his moves I’d say he’d performed
a magic trick or two back when –
and then he went back to pluckin’ –
maybe because his hands were cold.

I didn’t have any change or cash –
just my Mom’s credit card,
so I topped my grocery bag with a sandwich and soda,
and set them down beside him,
for which he nodded without stoppin’ –
and I noticed his can was full to overflowin’.

I think I know understand magic a bit better now.

the World's Fair, in 198...2(?).
There used to be a little pedestrian-zone, in town..
real small.
But at lunch-time,..happy folks.

Your story reminded me of a poem,

Recently someone asked me to show them a card trick, and then challenged me to make them pick the joker. Not only did they take the joker, but I had "I KNEW YOU WOULD CHOOSE THE JOKER" written on the back of it (it was just a total coincidence that I was already using the joker as my force card).

I wish I could say they screamed that it was impossible, but unfortunately they were totally unimpressed, and made more challenges along with a few insults. I just got rid of them as soon as I could as they were also very high and seemed pretty dangerous.

So there it is, one of my most impressive magical feats, and it got one of the worst reactions.

Dick it was a few years back and I was just getting over a slump of my show not working. And at this time I felt I had broken through and made real progress. And that day of busking I was on fire the crowds were great. And the hats were fat. But man that Twix felt great with a long black at the end of the day and has stuck in my mind.

I often re-vist this story if I start judge my success on the money which seem to spiral into failure.
