The only busker I managed to catch was Jania Taylor. She had a good crowd, good magic, with lots of laughs and applause.

I think there were 5 different folks doing various street magic sessions over the 4 days.

I wish there were some way to get there without a car. I could get to Detroit by train or bus... but there doesn't seem to be a way to get to Colon

In the "old days", young guys would hitch hike or take the Greyhound to Battle Creek, or Coldwater, then phone Abbott's. Percy would send someone with a car to pick him up. The young guys, who had saved their money, all year, were Percy's best customers!

I just looked up Google Maps. Battle Creek does seem to be the closest area to Colon.
I think an Uber would be too expensive. Maybe... MAYBE, I could consider renting a car from Battle Creek. I have a license, but I've never been comfortable driving.

Yes Battle creek is very close and a pretty straight shot. Its a little bit of a drive from Kalamazoo but mostly back roads so not too stressful of a drive. Not sure if you have ever been before but its fun but make sure you lower your expectations a little especially if you have ever been to some of the bigger conventions.

I've never been to any magical convention. Back roads would make me more nervous, that I'd miss a turn off.

Its back roads no matter what way you go its a small town in the middle of nowhere. I think the term is po-dunk? for a while it lived up to its name "Colon" but in recent years they have done a bit of work to it so it is getting better. The Battle creek Kalamazoo national airport is actually in Portage which is the connecting town to Kalamazoo; they are actually one town more or less. You can fly into battle creek if you ship yourself in a giant Fedex package as that is the airport that is in Battle creek and its back roads from there too.
To make it even better nothing at the convention happens at the Abbott's shop its all done in out lying places, the middle school has the dealers room, across town at the high school is the night shows, the bars and legion are where the magicians gather for the close up competition, the heavy drinking happens at another place, then many people head to friends houses to party all night. Oh and book your hotel way in advance and if you cannot find one near by you will need to stay in another town near by; sooo more back country driving. Sorry not trying to make fun of what you are saying at all I am just trying to impress upon those that read this just how much back road there is in parts of Michigan. That said it might be one of the most beautiful states to drive in. |

I am not 100% sure but I think the Amtrak does go into Battle Creek. That would be a great way to go especially through Michigan there is a lot nice landscape along the way. Plus being able to sit back and let someone else get you there is never a bad thing.

Wife and I have taken Amtrak from Seattle up to Vancouver Canada. Absolutely loved it. Great scenery, no stress. Get up walk around..dining car..not cramped. Didn't have to wait in car to go through customs.
Highly recommend the train.

Amtrak does go to Battlecreek and also Kalmazoo. K-zoo also has a brick and mortar from my understanding.

When got it home, there were two needles in the box. Also some great prices on supplies like rope and mouthcoils. Other shop was gift store (cards and knick knacks) but owner liked magic and had small counter in the back. Picked up a few things once in awhile from him, but best was sitting and talking with him. Some good stories, and some great tips on magic. Unfortunately they retired, but I did score nice set of small copper cups for great price.
