I have been having some more complex than usual medical issues so I started just reading more about lesser used ideas and started playing with an older simple concept (that probably sits in many magic drawers). That said, the Mene Tekel Deck has really caught my curiosity.
I am looking for some ideas for different uses as well as set ups utilizing a Mene Tekel deck. I have read up on it in Greater Magic (Kaufman ed) as well as Encyclopedia of Card Tricks (Hugard) and a couple odd sources here and there. First thing I am wondering is, Do you prefer the short card of each pair on top or bottom when deck is face down? Has anyone tried using R&S principle with any success? I am thinking of this for the ability to spread the cards face up quickly to show a random order? Thoughts here? I have also made one with all 52 cards using a Phoenix Double Decker and so far experimenting is going great using long on top of short because these cards are also marked so I can riffle and truly stop where they want and as I seperate to show their chosen card, I can simply read the short mate that is still face down on top of the half in my dealing hand. I guess I don't want to break out the R&S or Science Friction spray until I hear how well it worked for others (if anyone has tried it). Also, feel free to PM me if you do not want to get too specific in this forum and if there is enough interest in exploring different ideas with either 26/26 combos or the full 52 (Phoenix Double Decker) we can move it to Secret Sessions Forum but most of these questions are fine for all members. Thanks in advance.

Greetings Poof-Daddy;
Get in touch with Paul Hallas, he is often here on the Café. Paul produced a book on things to do with a mene-tekel deck, and there are a lot of routines in it. I am not at home now, so I do not remember the name of the book off the top of my head (it's this getting older thing that keeps messing with my memory) But do drop Paul an e-mail or private message, the book is very well worth it. There is something very similar to this with matching pairs h2 and d2 together that uses the full 52 card deck. Then you can perform many miracles with finding matching pairs.
I have extended the idea further and others might have done the same with a memorised deck. So the matching pairs are not visually related but are in pairs related by your memorised deck. This means that the memorised deck can be shuffled and if you can determine one card you immediately know one adjacent card even though you do not the full deck order any longer. |

Greetings Poof-Daddy;
I'm back home and dug out that book for you. It is "Investigating The Mene-Tekel Deck" by Chris Wardle subtitled: Ideas and routines with magic's forgotten trick deck Paul Hallas produced the book and I'm sure he may still have some, possibly on library.com as well. Hope that helps All the Best Marty |

Thanks for the info. I will dig a little more. Has anyone tried the R&S on the pair's for a quick deck spread to show "all different/no pairs"?

Ordered and received Nate Kranzo's Mene-Tekel dvd (instant download now) I also grabbed a bundle of his pdf books, some of which have more info in them.
On Lybrary, I found 2 potentially good pdf's - https://www.lybrary.com/selfcontained-ca......395.html and as referred to above - https://www.lybrary.com/investigating-th......283.html by Chris Wardle rather than Paul Hallas although they seem to collaborate on a lot of their magic books. The Kranzo dvd gets into some R&S as well as red and blue backs and I believe the Shawn Evans book gets into those as well as the short over long / long over short differences so that will probably be my next source.

Look into Multitude by Vincent Hedan. It's sort of a variation of a Mene-Tekel concept. It also doesn't use dupes, odd backs or R&S so it can be examined and the effects on his DVD or book on the deck are definitely brain busters. They are also extremely easy to perform. The effects can all flow from one to another without any additional set up, so it's easy to build full sets with the deck. I love messing around with this deck.

While you are of necessity expanding your horizons, see if you have Marlo's Magazine Volume 1 that has Marlo's effect "Think as I Think." It uses two gaffed decks, one of which is a ROUGHED red-blue Mene-Tekel deck.
I am just mentioning it here in case the idea of a roughed Mene-Tekel deck with each pair being two different colors opens up any avenues of thought that one which works on the Svengali principle does not. I do not know what the 2nd deck is in the Marlo effect and I don't remember it. I lost most of my Marlo material in a move in 2012. |

Check out the MRD deck by Liam Montier. It uses a Mene Tekel Deck in a multiple selection/revelation trick.

Wow. There seems to be a ton of info on such an underutilized deck. I would guess it is also way lesser known than a stripper or a Svengali deck. I have already found enough to keep me busy with it for a good while and stuff keeps popping in. Thanks all. Maybe we can revive this deck like Nate Kranzo did with all his work on it.

I also recommend the MRD deck by Liam Montier. His handling tips are excellent. You can use the M T deck as if it is a normal deck. Spectators will not notice.
He also as a great dvd on the thick card. excellent. |

This is an interesting deck indeed. Time to check out a couple of resources myself and to investigate if I can find something already made. I had been already looking at Phoenix Double Decker.

Poof-Daddy is the online DVD (instant download) you ordered, the one from kranzomagic site? If so, is it good video/audio quality?

Absolutely. It comes as 6 (IIRC) small vids (kind of like separating the chapters on a DVD. I like it a lot.

The Mene Tekel deck is great for impossible location tricks. While they are looking at their card, you can be getting the dupe ready for appearing at an impossible location. Or you can have them sign it sw...tch and show the other.., and achieve the same thing.
