I was watching Masters Of Illusion television show on the CW network this evening at 8:00 P.M. They were showing season 6 Episode 11. The next to last 2 performers were holding a plexiglas clear cylinder, an 18" silk, and a length of rope. I immediately recognized the effect, it was Harold Rice's effect that he sold for over 80 years. It was the classic effect Rice's Glas-Go.
The Effect: A Spectrum silk is tied around the center of two ropes. Then a transparent plastic cylinder is placed over the silk and ropes. Finally, two spectators are requested to hold the four ends of the ropes. Then, in a flash, the performer pulls the cylinder up through the ropes, and the knotted silk is still inside of the cylinder! The two young men presented the effect with the stage size props, much like the instructions. It was a real surprise for me to see this classic effect on television. They still sell it today, quantity is very low, but it is available on their website. They sill sell it at 1960's prices. What a deal! https://www.silkkingmagic.com/Rice's%20Glas-Go.htm Just had to tell everyone. |

It's a nice visual effect! Nice flash, angle proof, packs small, plays big, involves spectators (could be kids) both silk, and ropes could be used in other tricks, ETC.

To add a bit more "flash" to the props, you could use the gold cords (with tasseled ends) that some high schools use to honor students at graduation. I've also always liked the "Lazy Magician" routine that Dante used in his full evening show, when I needed to pad my 45 minute program to 60 minutes for family evening programs. All of the "nice things" that I said about "Glass Go", also apply to "The Lazy Magician".

I love this trend of more diverse magic on the various television programs. There was a decade when everything was 'big box'. But now talented magicians of all types can get exposure on the programs.

Hey Andy!
Yeah! I've used the "g-ma's necklace principle, over the years. It's a bit too slow for an opener, and, not quite strong enough for a closer, BUT, it's a fine "middle". Dante used cords of fantasia (the lazy magician), to give himself a rest, but, keep the show "moving"!" As you know, many of my "generic" props are used in several different routines. (Saves weight and space in the prop case!)

Marvelous and versatile effect. Thanks for reminding us of this classic, Bill.
I remember that when I learned it I used a t-shirt in lieu of silk, which lent itself to interesting changes in method and presentation (for this, having the t-shirt specially printed). |

Finally got to see the episode. Boy does it play big and present well. Nice job by Jarrett & Raja.
