No worries there Videoman, mine is going back. not to expose too much, but something is done to the sharpie beforehand and it makes that area weaker. I've taken many sharpies apart before and never once broke one. I was going to get the full Chip set as well but I'm definitely holding off now until I see some favorable reviews.
BTW, the first reviewer for floating sharpie on Penguin also shattered his. Quote:

Not sure if anybody’s broke because they did not watch the video ??? He goes over it a lot. But mine is ok. It took some time to open because I was extra cautious from what he said. Or maybe I got lucky.

Sadly mine also broke. I watched the video dedicated to this part and used the same, if not less force than Matthew shows. I believe it cracked because of the weak point created by gimmicking the Sharpie, I also can’t see a way where taking it apart like this wouldn’t have broken it. Maybe changing the position of the pen would help? I’m genuinely not trying to criticise the effect as it must be gutting for a Matthew to get this feedback. I wonder if there’s a better/different way to take apart the pen?
In short I’d really like to work with people with suggestions on making this part easier. One suggestion for Murphys would be that the gimmick is supplied separated, so this part is already done for your first setup. |

It’s a shame Matthew’s new releases are of poor quality. It appears he rushed the production to get them to market and bypassed a stage of quality control. I bought Outnumbered at Blackpool and ended up giving it away because of quality issues. Hopefully these things will be ironed out for the next versions.

It is really disappointing to be hearing these comments about floating sharpie.
The item was not rushed to market and has been in development for over 2 years. I have been performing this myself for over a year and never had a gimmick break. The breaks you are experiencing I do not think are anything to do with the gimmick and are simply people using too much force...something that I explicitly warn against during in the instructions. They would happen on this gimmick and on any other Sharpie pen....they are a real sharpie pen. They are not "impossible" or "too tight" to remove...as they needed to be removed from the casing to make the gimmick in the first place. Please follow the advice and be gentle with the prop. It will come out...and after a few goes will loosen up anyway. This is not a fault in production....this is a real sharpie pen. The point where the nib comes out of the barrel is quite thin plastic and will break if you use too much force. I have tried it with the floating sharpie and with regular sharpies and the result is the same. if you use too much force ....it will break. |

So it’s the users fault that the gimmick is breaking.

I think it is more that Sharpie pens are quite thin plastic at that point and if too much force is applied it will snap. They are not really designed to be opened up...but it is an essential part of the set up process so extra care needs to be taken.
I take responsibility for this.... Perhaps I didn't explain the technique fully in the instructions and I have made an extra little video just to make this part of the process extra clear. Hopefully with the extra care the breaks will be eliminated. There have been around 50 magicians using the Floating Sharpies since February and this is the first I have heard of any problems. They have not been rushed to market and have been tested in the real world by independent magicians for many months before full release. |

My girlfriend is not a magician and successfully opened over a thousand sharpies for my effect BLISS and less than ten cracked, that was just because of rushing those ones. I suggest you go VERY SLOWLY, gently rocking back and forth the pen will come apart. If you are cracking the pen I think you are going too fast, it’s all explained in instructions.
I love both Sharp Turn and Floating Sharpie and will def do both. |

How often is it necessary to open up the sharpie in this way? Is it one-time after you receive it or is it something you have to do frequently?

It depends which routine you use. You need to open it to reset....and you can do that once a month.....or alternatively every time you perform.
For my FISM act I have done it probably 3 times in 6 months. If you are handing it out for inspection after every performance you will have to reset it every time. |

I've had some practice dismantling Sharpies whilst tinkering with Noels excellent BLISS gimmick prior to using Matthews TMFS. I find that if you have the Sharpie lid slightly loose on the nib, it adds just that extra leverage on popping off the nib. Matthews tutorial does illustrate that the slow rocking motion with carefully applied force, does the trick.
Another tip; for prepping to perform, is having a very small amount of Blu Tack under the loop where it meets the end of the Sharpie. This really helps in teasing out the loop ready to perform, ditching the Blu Tac. Matt G's Ultimate Sharpie holder is also very handy in protecting the gimmick, sliding in some of the sponge packaging of TMFS down its side. Happy floating!

I know what everyone is saying but there was no way to slowly rock it back it forth. I watched the videos and did as instructed. It just wouldn't budge. I can easily do the slow rocking with 3 new sharpies I have right here, right now - and the nib pops right out. This was just different, it was stiff as a board and would not flex. The instant I put any extra pressure on it to get it to flex, it snapped. I don't know what else to say other than it did feel different than my other sharpies I have here.

Here’s what worked for me. Take the cap off, wrap the pen end in a bit of tissue paper, hold the gray end with one hand and use a pair of pliers in the other hand to gently grip and wiggle the pen end out. Took two seconds.

Works for me also,
thanks oombob. I always use pliers to open a sharpie (for other gimmicks use, such as smoke) best marco Quote:

When I open a regular Sharpie purchased at the local store, the only way I can get it to open is with a pliers and pull straight out from the gray body. The sharpie has ridges on the inside that prevent turning it left and right or twisting the barrel and cap. It is very tight so it takes a lot of strength. They make it this way to prevent evaporation of the ink.
Please use a pad of leather or lays of cloth to prevent the pliers from damaging the cap. It will still take you several minutes to get it apart. I would think the creator would have sanded down those ridges to make it easier to open. |

I received my floating sharpie a few days ago. I saw all the reviews so I was very cautious. I watched the video before even touching the sharpie.
I finally tried to gently remove it but it would not move. The only way was to add more force but I was still careful. But it broke. I wrote to Penguin and they just sent a new one. I’ll give it another chance. |

A new video was added a couple of days ago to avoid any issues.
Please make sure that Penguin have sent you this extra video along with the original. I have never had this happen despite hundreds of set ups...but clearly some people are having issues so I came up with a simple quick fix video to avoid any further problems |
