That was quick, Tommy! One of the main reasons I saved up my pennies and left South Africa to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, was to learn how to write and arrange in the style of Duke Ellington. (The other reason was to delve deeply into film scoring techniques).
Here are the rest of my clues: 4. My first job was selling peanuts at Washington Senators baseball games. 5. I started sneaking into a poolroom at age fourteen. 6. Hearing the music of the poolroom pianists ignited my love for the instrument. 7. In 1914, while working as a soda jerk, I wrote my first composition. 8. Eventually I wrote more than one thousand compositions. 9. While working as a freelance sign-painter from 1917, I began assembling groups to play for dances. 10. In the 1930s, my band got to tour in Europe for the first time. 11. Due to income from my songwriting royalties, I was able to hire the top musicians for my band. 12. I melded them into the best-known orchestral unit in the history of jazz. 13. I am noted for my inventive use of the orchestra, as well as my eloquence and charisma. 14. After I died, and I was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize Special Award. 15. My autobiography is entitled “Music Is My Mistress”. 16. “Satin Doll” and “Take The ‘A’ Train” are probably my most recognizable songs. Your turn, Tommy! |
