I really enjoyed the first Coffee House Conjuring. Hope this one is good too.
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/12500 Dry Roasted - Have your friend grab a packet of sugar from the coffeehouse prep bar. Explain that you will show her how to enjoy coffee without a cup. You then pour the sugar and a tiny bit of coffee from the suction of a straw into your closed and empty fist. After a squeeze, you open your hand to reveal that the coffee and sugar have both vanished and in its place is a small fistful of coffee beans — without any help from Vernet! Available Now! Preconsleeved - Two coffee sleeves create a stunning sympathetic effect. Whatever you draw or doodle on one sleeve magically appears on the other. You then repeat the effect while a spectator holds the second sleeve. The method is crazy simple and the presentational possibilities are crazy fun. Releasing on September 27th Raising Cane - Inspired by Williamson, a spectator uses a napkin to clean out a small cup and its lid to make sure everything is completely dry. The lid is placed on the cup and they hold it high above their head. You pour the contents of a sugar packet into your hand, and shortly thereafter, it completely disappears and reappears inside the cup they've been holding high above their head — without the cheat of a thumb tip! Releasing on October 4th Ambi-Dextrose - A spectator grabs a white and brown sugar packet. They are placed on the table as you say that the packets will switch places without touching them. Just wave your hands over the packets and it’s done. You open the brown packet and white sugar pours out. THEY open the white packet and brown sugar pours out. Remember that your coffee mate fetches the packets from the prep bar for you. Releasing on October 11th Venti-llusion - You show two cups exactly the same size with exactly the same amount of coffee in them. With one cup in each hand, you hold them at chest level, showing that if you extend your arms in opposite directions it appears that one cup is larger than the other. You end by making the impossible happen in that one of the cups is now clearly larger than the other — with illusion becoming reality! Releasing on October 18th Ripped and Refined - A torn and restored sugar packet that happens inside of a cup. You simply open the packet, pour in the sugar, followed by the packet; give it a shake and pour out the completely restored packet onto their hands. You start clean and end clean, with everything self-contained and examinable. Releasing on October 25th Grasping at Straws - You restore the torn and peeled end of a straw sleeve — in the spectators hand! Releasing on November 1st Coff-Links - The strangest coffee creation ever — linking rings with coffee sleeves. You do it with your sleeves and then their sleeves and end with an impossible-object souvenir. Releasing on November 8th Caffeine Free - A GREAT trick you can perform while standing in the coffee line. When it's your turn to pay, you grab ANY gift card near the register and have the barista scan that card. Naturally, nothing happens because the card is yet to be activated. You then pull out a $5 bill and rub it on the card. To their astonishment, when they scan the card again, it works perfectly and they have no clue what just hit them. In short, you get a free cup of coffee and blow their minds at the same time. Releasing on November 15th |

I got Preconsleeved and I love it, but I just realized Starbucks had changed the design of the sleeves and made the logo almost full size, which greatly reduces drawing area. I don’t think it’ll make it impossible, it’ll just change the dynamic of the art. Still a great effect.

I’m hoping these get more intricate. Can’t go wrong with Greg’s stuff but so far, the tricks are pretty basic if you’re old to the craft .

Our Coffee Houses mostly all went out of business. No one "hangs" in them at all. Even Starbucks is mostly empty or customers. Only 1 or 2 men reading the newspaper. They keep opening, but never any success like Kelsey Grammer in the Frasier sitcom television show. Cities like ours with no foot traffic just cannot support such a coffee house. Then they cannot obtain enough parking lot to fill the place with bodies. Starbucks has drive up, and that is what helps them more then anything else.
So seemingly presenting impromptu magic in such a place, just isn't realistic in today's automotive life style. I was really surprised to not see Starbucks full of people, you think it would be a gathering place, but it is not. Bars are still the places people gather, maybe they should come up with some great impromptu bar magic. Oh, there are no franchise bars that I know of with readily available props. Oh Well. |

If only Starbucks would put a real shot in their coffee. That would get her going.

There is a Costco I used to go to, not too far away, where there was never a line (versus the 12 person deep lines at the local Costco). Regional differences can be quite striking, even just over a hill or through a dale... But, working in San Francisco, near UCSF, every coffee shop is full to the point of no open tables unless you get there when they open or are lucky as heck. My home town (a 1.5 hr commute away from the city) is not quite as busy, but always at least a table or two is full, much more earlier or later in the day. All that being said, I'm on the fence for this one. I find the lack of seating tough so I am usually only in and out of the coffee shop (which, interestingly enough, is directly downstairs from the lab I work in). Chris |

The principles thought in this great release lend themselves to be adapted to other kind of performing environments as well.

I picked up Raising Cane, and felt the trailer was a bit deceptive - that is, there is a moment that is cut out to make it appear as though the magician does not go near the cup after it is wiped clean. In the download this same performance is shown again but this time they include a few more seconds - the moment the move takes place - and it sort of jumped out to me

Instead of using sugar, can you use packets of salt and pepper in Ambi-Dextrous? Not all coffee houses have brown sugar.

On Oct 10, 2019, magicmind wrote: I didn't get Dry Roasted as the effect didn't interest me, but I have picked up the others. Preconsleeved: Simple, clever, totally workable and easy to do. There's nothing earth shattering but it's a good straightforward effect, and one that could easily be built upon to do other effects (and not just in a coffee shop -- though it does work particularly well there). I like it. Raising Cane: Also pretty straightforward and clever, building on another decently well known effect, but making it work in a coffee house setting and (in my opinion) making it work better than the trick it was based on. Haven't watched the new one yet so no thoughts on it yet. In both of the ones I watched, the explanations are very clear and well taught, though, *** someone should have made sure that David's microphone was working, because he's often hard to hear. Greg does most of the explaining though, and as per usual, he does a really good job, not just going over all the details, but really explaining some of the thinking behind it, and in Raising Cane especially detailing the times he flubbed the effect and how that happened (and how to avoid those mistakes -- something that more effects should include). I was a bit skeptical in picking both of these up (and, partly, wondered just how much more you could do in a coffee house), but those two effects are both pretty direct and clever. They'll definitely fool people who will have no clue how they're done. Because the teaching is so good, there's also plenty of information if you want to take these effects and customize them to your own style. |
