So, in the early hours of Thursday September 19 a dark colored 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled up to Dan Sperry's private warehouse door.

A man got out and broke the deadbolt of his front door and entered where he proceeded to start packing his Jeep with as much of Dan's stuff as he could fit and took off.

Not long after he returned with an accomplice who appeared to be female. They entered and continued to burglarize Dan's warehouse and destroy, trash and vandalize as much as they could inside. During the burglary they found the spare key to his van and then with his van loaded up as well they stole everything else.

Dan lost his one man act, lighting and sound equipment, magic, his awards, and all his computers that run his lights and sound.

Dan has a GO FUND ME to help him get back on his feet: https://www.gofundme.com/f/dansperry

And there you can learn more about the details of the robbery

If you know your magic history, so much of the early years of magic was about magicians "stealing" tricks and acts from other magicians. There are some who perform other magicians’ material; others don’t just take the tricks; they take the whole routines, the lines, the timing, the movement. Sometimes they even steal proprietary illusions and the acts that make people famous.

Dan has very literally had his act stolen, to the point that now he can't perform.

This is our chance to show that we are a family - and to come alongside a brother and restore him. To write a new page in magic history, this time by giving back.

Even if you can't donate - help spread the word in your magic circles.

Thank you

My lord how debilitating. Worse yet do you suggest another magician did this? If it is then it is really shocking. Not that you suggest it, but that it is actually possible.

Who else would WANT it? Someone had to know who's warehouse they were breaking into. I suppose it's possible that they thought they were stealing some valuable stuff, but it sounds like they were after specific items.

Several years ago, a friend had his box of coins taken. In that case, the thief likely thought it was a collection of valuable coins. And it was, considering that probably 30% of them were gaffed. I doubt that the thief had a clue what they were and likely tossed them when he realized they weren't spendable.

Oh yea, it totally sounds like he was either stalked by a "super fan" or targeted by someone out to ruin him

Well crack addicts are not known for their intelligence. Maybe they saw the stuff and hoped a quick turn around. Not really fair to automatically think of another magician. That is sort of a leap. A leap with very little evidence to back it up.

It is bad enough this happened without impugning other magicians needlessly.

Nobody is suggesting or hinting another magician did this - but Dan's storage area is only known to less than 10 people and sits in an unmarked facility in a nice area of town. If you were trying to look in through windows or doors, you would see nothing.

Initially the crook was working solo, described as smartly dressed with slacks and nice button shirt. He spent about 20 minutes inside and packing up his own hatchback with as much as he could. He drove off and came back later dressed a little different and now wearing a baseball hat and had what appears to be a shorter woman with him. Then they spent about 45 minutes inside trashing the place and stealing everything they could cram into the car and Dan's van.

They were not rushing or anything like that. They were clearly comfortable with what they were doing and seemed to target specific things. For example they took Dan's 25th anniversary champion Lance Burton Award that he got when he was 16 years old and they tried to take his pig microphone stand but they left expensive stuff nice like a nice ink jet printer and audio equipment.

The point of this post was not to place blame or to make wild suggestions - merely to say that we have an opportunity to make our brother whole again.

Was there ever any update to this? That is, was anyone ever caught? Was the van traceable and ever found?

90% of all crime is an inside job.they knew well who he is, they took all they could, ransacked the place to do as much psychological damage to him as possible.somebody's getting even...a sad situation...the old saying,"your friends will kill you"...
God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

Where exactly does this statistic come from? I have never really heard it before. You seem to have investigated the crime pretty thoroughly. You have a great many conclusions made.
