Jack Straw from Wichita, cut his buddy down
And dug for him a shallow grave, and laid his body down Half a mile from Tucson, by the morning light One man gone and another to go, my old buddy you're moving much too slow We can share the women, we can share the wine |

I met Mr. Baker once. it was in 1988 and I was working as a messenger for a company that did entertainment work. I delivered a package to him. It was 10 in the morning, and he looked in sorry shape. I felt he was high on something.
He never really attained that status of Keith Moon, but he was pretty wild behind the drums. Rest in Peace Mr. Baker.

I even listened to his "Air Force" albums back in the day because the two record set only cost me 99 cents as a cut-out when a single LP cost $5.99 or $6.99.

RIP Mr Baker. Great drummer and a great character.
If anyone is interested I highly recommend the documentary "Beware of Mr Baker". The opening scene in which Baker tells the filmmaker, who Baker invited to his home, "I'm going !@#$**g to put you in hospital" then raps him in the nose with his cane is quite the jumping off point for a story of Gingers life and career. I love this part of the film, particularly the 46:52 mark where Eric Clapton absolutely dismisses any comparisons between Keith Moon, John Bonham, and Ginger Baker. He literally scoffs at the notion. The whole movie is available on Youtube in a free version. |
