The 1st thing that comes to mind, is that you should never attempt to "fix" someone gimmick without their permission.

Never put oil in a reel, it will get on the attached item, and destroy it.

Slow is a relative term, what is slow to you is not slow to another person.

To answer your question, not there is nothing you can do to make it faster, that is the job of the spring.

You can put a very, very, very, light coat of Vaseline inside to make it work smoother, not faster. To do this you have to take apart the reel. You do this at your own risk, as it may fly apart, and unless you paid very close attention to how it is assembled, you will not be able to put it back together.

Speed of a reel has nothing to do with the working of the retraction of the line. It is the operator that must lean how to handle a reel. Get Paul Diamond's DVD Reel Magic, or the download on silk magic Volume 1, and learn how to handle a reel.

Yes, they are so fast, I had to put a brake inside because they would tear the silk up, so I took Paul Diamond's advice and changed to a ladies head scarf, which is heavier. Some of the audience members would ask why I was holding a silk for so long that did not do anything. I told them that was the serpent silk, knot that unties it's self. They said what knot, I did not see a knot. The scarf through microphone, they wanted to know what I was doing, holding a silk behind the microphone. I guess they missed the penetration. So I did again, and again, they did not see the effect. They just said it looked like I was just holding a scarf for a long time.
