I've used yarn in place of a ribbon, and it works well. I spotted the needles at a fabric store ages ago. They're upholstery needles.

The needles look to be 24 inches long. Super sharp seems a benefit(!) but how thin?, and how important is the taper? Is 18 inches too short?
Thank You |

Can anyone help with a US source for an appropriate needle. Has anyone had success with DIY?

Why go to all the effort of DIY (which I guarantee will cost you double or triple in the end , compared to just purchasing it from a magic shop). Sadly, the very first thing you will see in such a search is Google Ai explaining how the trick works . Then the next two search results are videos on YouTube by Robert Baxt and Steve Spangler exposing the trick. (and there are dozens more exposure vids on YouTube) When a magical effect has become a classroom "science demonstration", it's pretty much dead as a magic effect, unless you can come up with a new method that will disprove the explanation given in dozens of YouTube videos. Some things that have been exposed (for example: the good old TT) can be worked around by clever handling and misdirection , so even if the spectators are generally aware of the existence of the TT, the way you use it means they never see it or suspect it is in play (for goodness sake, don't use it to make a itsy bitsy red silk hanky vanish and reappear in your hand). But there's no feasible workaround for something like Needle Thru Balloon being exposed , unless you can perform it in such a way that clearly disproves the commonly known method. |

They will vary from ~14 gauge to ~10 gauge depending on length of the needle. All will work. 18" to 16" is a good length for the common balloons. If it isn't sharp enough, you can sharpen it with a fishhook sharpener or sandpaper. |

Updated link to the Boretti needle mentioned earlier in the topic, followed by a Google translation of the description on the webpage:
https://boretti.de/Borettis-Ballonnadel "What few people know is that this is an original trick by Boretti. (See the note below from Magicpedia.) A long metal needle is pushed through a crystal-clear balloon without bursting it. This has since become a classic in magic. "The right tools are crucial here. You will receive a metal needle approximately 45 cm long. This is heavily chrome-plated and has a long silk ribbon at the eye. You will also receive 10 pure latex balloons. "If you would like more crystal-clear balloons, which are best for the unprepared version, you can find them under the accessories. Description: Replacement balloons for balloon needle. "Needle Through Balloon," from MagicPedia, the free online encyclopedia for magicians by magicians: "Needle Through Balloon is an illusion where a sharp needle is passed through a balloon without popping it. First published as "No Bop Balloon" by Canadian Tom Ransom in New Phoenix No. 312 (July 23, 1954) "It was being marketed as "The Pincushion Balloons" by 1956. "Super Needled Balloon" was created by Boretti from Germany which included a length of ribbon or yarn attached to the needle that also penetrated the balloon. "Doug Henning made the trick popular after performing the illusion on one of his television specials."
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Funtime out of India put out a very nice, affordable package with an 18" needle, balloons, and ribbon. I know that Ickle Pickle Magic carried them in the past. If I was in need of one, I would reach out to Adam, the new owner, and see if they still have them in stock. |
