If you do not, or have not been a fan, or at least a casual reader of comic books, this thread is probably not going be enjoyable for you.
I have always wondered how a power ring could possibly work for a Green Lantern. I creates constructs of basically limitless energy out of the mind of the wearer. The power source, it is explained is a large power battery many galaxies away, that feeds power to a smaller battery in the possession of the GL. The ring touches the battery and holds a charge for 24 hours. First of all, the time of 24 hours has no meaning of any kind other than the length of a day on Earth, so that is rather arbitrary. The ring defies multiple laws of physics which I will happily explain to any who wants me to, but beyond that what is a power ring? Here is what I have come to believe about the GL ring and battery. Some years ago, Green Lantern Katma Tui was sent into a lightless void to recruit a green lantern. "however they quickly ran into a linguistic barrier. Being from an entirely blind race, Rot Lop Fan had no concept of light or color. The terms "green" and "lantern" had no meaning to him, and could not be translated by the power ring. The resourceful Katma Tui reasoned that if she could not explain the concepts of light, she would translate using sound. She instructed Rot Lop Fan to imagine a sound with a pleasing resonance. This he did, as a sound in the F-Sharp range. With the concept of sound, Rot Lop Fan could manipulate the energy of the power ring. Rot Lop Fan was overjoyed and accepted the commission into the Corps. Katma Tui modified Rot Lop Fan’s uniform to reflect a bell insignia on his chest and welcomed him into the "F-Sharp Bell Corps." His ring has also adopted the appearance of a bell, which Rot Lop Fan uses with great effectiveness." So, if Katma could tell this creature that the ring made sound to use as a weapon, who is to say that another creature didn't explain it as light to humans? That would make sense as light is the major source of human perception. So the reality is, that the ring neither produces light or sound, but simply something else that we perceive that way. Note, if anyone wants to tell me that this is merely sci fi/fantasy/fiction and I should not analyze it, feel free, but this I already knew. I just do this as a fun science exercise.

Ok I'm confused. Are you actually trying to somehow hold a comic book hero who uses a ring to create light constructs that are hard to physics as we understand on earth?
I don't believe any of the Green Lantern cannon is being taught in schools as proper physics is it? I don't know why you read comics at all. Not one of them is going to hold up to actual physics in real life. Even powerless heros like Batman, Punisher, Hawkeye, Green Arrow and go forth regularly defy any sort of actual life experience even for the most gifted. In reality I would be more upset about THOSE breaches of natural law because the the case of the Green Lantern you can just say, "it is magic" and all is explained. All that to say Tom is right!

Mythological figures are not bound by physics.
Both Apollo and Dionysus have been abandoned, their fight taken up by new opponents in that same never ending battle for headspace. The opponents claim territory with copyright and trademark law - their losses and gains announced in quarterly returns. In jest: Issac Newton's superhero adventures are left unpublished. For that matter, pi is not really 3.104558

? By the time they learn f=ma they also know fantasy from physics.
Watching adults dispute incidental details in light entertainment as if such were revealed truth or canon is...hmmm [not for danny] In Star Trek canon, is the Vulcan statement about nothing unreal exists understood as paraphrasing the ancient Greek Sophist Gorgias from his work On Nature? [/not for danny]

If you can find a Physics teacher to ask, I'll bet he would tell you that using Physics to debunk Super Powered characters is a great buy in to get kids who would rather be playing video games to focus on the subject at hand. Heck, a Highly regarded College Physics Profesor published a book called "The Physics of Super-Heroes." He made a lot of money and went on speaking tours of other colleges and even some high school groups. Now, just find a Physics teacher to ask first hand...

Everything I know about the Green Lantern was learned by watching Robot Chicken.
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.

This guy's specialty is applying science to fictional characters such as comics superheroes. His vids are actually pretty interesting. Science always loses to plot armor though.

There’s nothing like the Green Lantern/Green Arrow social issues.

The most mind-boggling feat I saw the power ring do,Cliff, came from one issue where Hal Jordan got so over-stressed that in extreme anger, he angrily commanded the ring," Eliminate All Evil!" As a result ALL of the people on Earth suddenly vanished! As it turns out,the ring had transported all of Earth's people to the parallel Earth-Two of the other Green Lantern, Alan Scott. The explanation is that the ring cannot kill so to eliminate All evil,it transported the billions of people to Earth-Two.

I read that story.
I like it too. I liked both the hamnity of it as well as the morality.

Those issues were groundbreaking and held in high regard. [/quote] I can understand why those stories were not for everyone. It was arguably the first time DC played their heroes as "human" as apposed to perfect people who can never be or do wrong. Anyone wanting just superhero action would be left wanting by those stories. For me, those GL/GA stories made me care about the characters and not just the situation. It made the books more meaningful and relevant to me.
