Hello !
this is obviously a question from an absolute beginner, but I dop hope you'll want to help anyway... If you perform a brainwave type routine and someone asks to see the cards, how do you turn them down ? I know Eugene Burger's version uses less gaffed cards, but still... Please, help because I like this effect so much. Kiss, Rose |

What kind of brainwave are you doing? Do you use 8 cardbrain wave or the gaffed version?
I don't do the gaffed deck version but I use other gaffed decks so here is my tips: 1) obviously the key to any mentalism effect that relys on trickery is to act natural. You have to find a way to subtley comunicate that the cards are not important and that they are just a means to an end. Its when you subcounciously let the spectator know that the trick lies in the cards that they will want to see the deck. 2) You have to control the performance space. Remember that most people will not have seen mentalism up close before and will take their lead on how to act from you. If you force a polite respectable atmosphere then there will not be any trouble. Make sure you have this atmosphere before hand, if you don't have it then remeber that you are the peformer, and you are not under an obligation to show them this trick. So if yiou think you will have problems, don't do it! Do something else that is sure fire. In mentalism you must control every moment. 3) If your really stuck do a deck switch. While people are reacting or whatever, pick up the cards put them back inside the box and put them in your pocket. (Have a normal deck in your pocket in the matching coloured box) Then if they ask to see the deck bring out the normal deck(But don't let them have it for to long unless they find a duplicate or whatever.) They key to this one again is to act natural, as if it doesn't matter. If you begin to commununicate discomfort they will smell a gaff and demand that you empty your pockets, strip naked and have a full body search (okay abit far!) To be extra successful make sure you have the cards in your pocket before they ask. N.B. here is an idea that works well with the above. On both card boxes (gaffed and ungaffed) get some black tape and put a ring of tape round the outside of the box. This marks that perticular card case and it is something that specs will subconciously notice. So when you bring out the normale box with the same marking they will hopefully recognise it as the previous card case. Finally have a script memorized that takes the magic of the effect away from the cards and onto you. that the effect happened becuase of something you did. (physcological, physcic or whatever) Act naturally and have control of the specs. |

Very good advice majik. I often am worried about spectators asking to see gaffed decks, but you cover some good points.
