There are several big differences that I have found in my searches (three coin stores in the LA area.) These comments are all for circulation grade coins. I really have not found “soft” or “slick” Peace dollars. “”Slick” Morgans are commonplace.

The milled edge on Peace dollars is really well defined. As good as 64 Kennedy halfs. Peace dollars are much shinier. Morgans are a gray color. Morgans are thinner and lighter.

My observations,
Frank

I personally use silver quarters and half dollars, but I have to admit Peace dollars are beautiful.

Magiciangirl, excuse the ignorance, but where do you get silver quarters? Thanks in advance, Lee.
In December of '06 I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans. One in a million people worldwide are diagnosed with this type of cancer annually. Sarcomas account for 1% of all cancers. Knowledge is power!

Lee:

I'm pretty sure that quarters, pre-1964 have some silver in them. Like dimes, I think quarters were made of precious metal at one time. I could just as easily be wrong about that, but I don't think so.

Best,

Lee, my having silver quarters is just out of luck. Everytime I find silver quarters (which is once in every five or six years) I make sure to keep them. My dad always sends me them when he happens to stumble upon one, in fact the last one I got was from him. I've just always kept my eyes peeled.

However, I'm sure you can buy them, try a search on ebay.

Hope this helps!

I use Morgans but mostly because all my gaffs are Morgans. They look good too.

If you use ungaffed coins look at the Victorian Crowns. They are quite lovely but you will be hard pressed to get gaffs unless someone makes them for you specially.

So Frank, apparently the answer is whichever one you think is better looking. Unless you think that the Peace dollars sound better. You'll probalby have to judge for yourself.

Try hitting the local coin shop and asking to see the junk silver bin filled with old coins. That's how I got my matched sets of Franklin halves, Walking Liberties and Peace dollars.

Personally, I think Morgan's are one of the ugliest coins ever minted in the States. You'll have to decide which one look best to you. I picked the Peace dollars because I wanted them for Ammar's coins through silk and I had a presentation that needed Peace dollars, for a line in the script.

I bought my silver quarters at a jewlrey shop, and had them gold plated there too....they told me the gold would stick better to a silver coin then a modern clad coin. Does anyone know if that's true? Or did I get taken for fifty cents a quarter, lol?

I sometimes find silver quarters in my register at work. It is rare that I find them, but still better than nothing. When I found it, I thought it was a magician's gaff coin. I looked at it closer and realized it wasn't. Only magicians seem to notice these things.

Todd Lassen sells them as gaffed coin sets his work is well known and respected. He came to me by way of recommendation from Troy Hoosier, an excellent con, eh coin artist.

I'm glad I did a search on Morgan Dollars. I need them for my Medicine Show Character Doc Grayson. He still thinks it is 1888 so when he does strolling I wanted to keep his authentic. My first concern was what would people think of my handling 120 year old coins by anything other than the edges. Then I found out Morgans were made plentifully as they were used as the money for the casinos in their time. Any recommendations on who to buy Dollar Size Okito Coin Boxes and the like? I didn't go for half dollars from that time period as they are a lot more expensive than the Morgan Dollars.

Thanks
