You flashed at least twice. The drop from the initial hold of the coin to the fingers was very obvious due to the way you moved your thumb to do it. When you used the coin bite gimmick it was clearly moved with your lip. The switch from gimmicked coin to normal was a bit wonky, too. You telegraphed the actions a lot there. The important action was out of frame several times. It would have been better to have the camera operator a little further away to have a larger frame to be able to keep track of your actions. This is particularly important for the coin transformation near the end. I am not sure if this was done on purpose to allow you to execute methods without it being possible to see them, but it disrupts the narrative you're trying to give and people just wonder why the camera is focused where it is. If you're going to do videos where there's close up shots of your fingers - make sure your finger nails and cuticles look decent. It's quite distracting to see hang nails when I'm wanting to see some magic. Oh, and watch the concentration face - This is the expression one makes when totally focused on an action that has yet to become natural to them. If you watch this video back you see your smile flick on and off - on when you want to emphasize that something has happened, then immediately gone as you concentrate on performing the next action. The sharp changes in expression creates a feeling of lack of confidence, as if you're trying to remember what you're supposed to do next and how to do it. Now more happy thoughts - It's great that you're thinking in terms of a narrative. Produce a coin, do something with the coin, transform it into something else (with a holiday theme). In a visual medium like IG this is a nice little routine with potential to be really eye catching. You just need to clean it up a little more.

I enjoyed the video. I have a different take on the concentrating look and then smiling. For me it seemed to fit the character and I wouldn't change it. You are a kid just learning magic. It is hard and sometimes it works!

Sure it's rough in places but you are just starting and it takes time to get stuff down, including character. What works for one person doesn't for another. For example, after sixty years of magic I do not do the coin rolls or card flourishes because it isn't me. I do not want to look like a magician because then it just becomes a trick. Enjoy magic while you are learning it and have a great hobby. If you decide later it is something you want to do as a career, then you can focus more on the final presentation.
Hope you have many years of enjoyment ahead of you as I have in magic.

You're already far better than me after just four months and have a whole lifetime of magical fun ahead of you. I dislke you intensely and think you should take up a different hobby! Just kidding, practice, practice, practice and you'll never have to buy your own drink in a bar ever! When it comes to sleight of hand watch copious videos of Ricky Jay, Teller and Juan Tamariz. Read and absorb Bobo's modern coin magic book and have fun. |
