I think that they are just tired of some people dissing stuff that they haven't seen, or dissing, well you know!

Xformer-
Simon is on here from time to time and I'm sure he can defend himself. I am just one of many who are looking for real reviews on magic DVDs. Feel free to review my previous posts...I just used this particular thread to express my feelings on those who knock DVDs they haven't actually seen. Besides if I WERE Simon, I wouldn't be on here, I would be at home creating magic tricks and naming them after various rodents. Now, does anyone have anything to say ON TOPIC? :) |

Have just received my set of DVDs and must say they more than live up to the advertising claims. A top class professional magician giving every last detail on his commercial everyday routines......wonderful stuff. Just two comments really - yes it would have been nice to see the effects performed in a "live" situation. Also my Vol 3 Disc is missing audio track -obviously a production defect (i've just contacted penguins to arrange a replacement), but wondered if anyone else has noticed any problems.

I took a look at the first page of the DVD section of "The Good, The Bad and the Garbage," and did not see this thread. I posted a more comprehensive review of the set of DVD's in what is now a locked topic.
Here is the review: Quote:
Magic Makers has done it again! These fellows are really serious about producing quality, useful videos. Case in point -- their new Simon Lovell three DVD set, "The Madness Behind the Methods." Let me point out a couple of things about the DVD's in response to some of the complaints I have read about them. Yes, it would have been nice to have a live audience for the whole thing. But some of this stuff is intended for one on one performance, other parts for say, two or three spectators. Why they chose to use one person only is a mystery to me. It makes it a little more difficult, but it still worked. The most important things on this set are not the routines or the tricks, but the thinking behind the routines and the choreography of the moves. There are many simple things here and some more complex ones. I've been doing magic for more than 5 decades, now, and I found new thoughts here, as well as a couple of new approaches to old moves. However, if you want to be a stagnant, stick in the mud magician, doing the same junk all the other guys are doing, in a stiff, rigid, style, and you want to miss out on what makes magic magical, then don't buy these DVD's. Heaven forbid that you might actually IMPROVE! :nose:

Just had the opportunity to look at these DVDs this weekend, and I must say they are great. Simon has put together great effects to share, but more importantly he shares his underlying thinking and his vast experience. Despite Simon's comedic style, he is clearly a very deep thinker, and this comes through in these DVDs. Good stuff here!

Simon is a fantastic entertainer. I have not seen this new product, but having seen Simon perform many times, I am sure this DVD set is definitely worthwhile. He is extremely commercial, very skilled, and very funny.

I own the DVDs so I guess I qualify.
The material is OKAY. Some are gems and some are stupid (Star Trek anyone?). Simon is a good teacher with lots of good tips (his experience shows) I cannot stand his performance style. I don't understand why some magicians feel they need to present in this fashion. Sankey does it too. He's abnoxious. Someone must think he is funny, I don't. His experience and wisdom are worth the price of admission however. |

The beautiul thing about this art is that anyone can be part of it. Like going to the movies, some people like comedy, some drama, some like cheesy horror flicks. There is that variety to appeal to different tastes. Simon's persona doesn't fit everyone's taste, but the magic is suitable for all.

Oh no, not another annoying Sankey humor type. David Williamson is funny, Bill Malone is funny. Sankey is annoying. The Lovel party animal video I ahd was not funny.

Simon has a unique sense of humor, and from the times I have met him and talked to him I think he is a hilarious person, a top-notch performer, and a very helpful and nice guy. He is light years beyond most people's understanding of how to entertain people. I have seen him perform the material on this DVD for real people, and he KILLS them. I know the material works. It is up to you guys to make it work for you. And please don't copy his performance personality, because it won't work! Make this material your own, and I'm sure your audience will appreciate it.

I have decided to get this set of DVD's. I know that I will find something useful and that is all that matters to me. Simon is a working pro and beyond the magic, I'm sure a lot of subtle information will be shared.
Sure not every trick or effect will be my cup of tea, but this mans genius more than makes this set worth a serious look.

At first I thought Agathon was being a little picky in his complaint that this DVD was not shot before a live audience. On second thought I agree with everything Charles says. In person, before a live audience, Simon is an extemely funny, magical entertainer. He cracks me up and his magic is wonderful. On this DVD, his over the top style seemed a little tedious at times, but I'm sure others enjoyed every second. That being said, these 3 DVD's are great. Sure, you won't want to add every trick to your repertoire, but there are a lot of great tricks and so much behind the scenes stuff to learn. Not just the moves, but presentation and psychology. I've given the DVD's a quick once over and now I'm getting ready to watch them over and over again. This is the real deal.

I thought the set was pretty good, with some good magic. However, I agree with many of the other people on this thread about it not being in front of an audience.
I think the "one on one" format where the magician performs for just one person is a bit stilted and unrealistic. Especially for Simon, who is great in front of an audience... |
