The English newspaper, The Guardian, has printed an interesting article on the experiences of a reader specializing in astrology.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle......psychics

It's always fascinating to hear a reader unconnected to the world of Mentalism describe what she believed her successful methods consisted of -with real-world examples.

Thanks, Glenn. I didn't actually read the comments earlier. They are well worth checking out to discover how a middle-class, reasonably well-educated group of liberal people view psychic readings in general. Very informative.

I think it's very important to notice how many people specifically call the author's former clients stupid and gullible, when she specifically states they weren't stupid.

Very interesting, thank you, Martin. The story gave me a strange mix of empathy, bewilderment, sadness and laughter. I thought it was very well written and very engaging.

The Sokal Affair proved that highly intelligent people can be easily fooled. Geller fooled roomfuls of scientists with simple methods delivered with full conviction.

If people want to believe -for personal, usually emotional reasons -their intelligence level becomes almost irrelevant.

I would happily pay $ 50 for any psychic that can recite “ Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity” completely.

The question is whether or not you believe that quantum gravity is a social and linguistic construct.

For $ 50 I will believe that. Or not.

Until you open the box and observe the cat, you can both believe and not believe simultaneously.

It's called "cognitive dissonance."

Ah, ok. I know what that is. The example of a cat in a box seems a bit of an odd example to me to illustrate that, so that threw me off. Thanks for clarifying.
