I know this is one of those old old, nobody does anymore tricks, but I had wanted to add it to my stuck in my pocket do anytime tricks. However, as I'm trying to do it, I'll get it to catch, then the next 5 times in a row it won't. I seem to be doing the same thing, but very different results. I'm using a 2" hardware ring on a 2' (4'total length) ball chain.
Any suggestions? |

Clarification: I'm letting it tumble, I'm holding it with my fingers perpendicular to the chain. I've got the ring a little more than half way up the loop. So, I'm not certain what I am doing wrong.

Hold the ring between index finger and thumb, with edge of ring just touching middle finger. With other hand put your index finger against the index finger holding the ring. Practice moving your thumb away without moving your index finger. (Second index finger helps you learn to move thumb without moving index finger. ). The trick won’t work if both thumb and index finger release ring at same time. Once you have trained your thumb to move independently, then you don’t need the off-hand index finger used in the training process.

Move the ring up to about 3/4 from the bottom. Only move your thumb. It's hard to do at first, but gets easier. Don't get rattled, just focus on the ring sitting on your middle finger and the thumb release.

This is a pretty good tutorial....although I found it easier to do using only one hand. And yes, just move the thumb.
