Sorry, I think I put it wrong when I said Pirate Character.
I didn't mean fully dressed Pirate, but was looking more at voice characterization. and at an intimate gathering. Sort of like taking them on a pirate story/legend with coin/treasure magic to illustrate. But thanks Rob. Mental note: brainstorm some pirate stories, find mysterious tales that would lend to coin magic. construct some basic routines.

Just a day or two ago a few of us were talking about golden coins. Mike Gallo mentioned the Sasco gold replica coins, and I mentioned the effect "gold rush", which comes with a replica 1840's gold $20 coin and several replica gold nuggets. Those coins have a very old, almost pirate-like look to them. The effect is only $15, so if you were to buy, say, four of them, well then you'd have four old looking gold coins (for coins across, or whatever) and about 12 gold nuggets. That could look very pirate-treasure-ish. Also, if you added some custume jewerly and a "chest" of some kind, you could do all sorts of coin, linking ring or necklace, etc. effects, keeping them all in the chest, and use a "I found this magical treasure chest" type of premise for the whole act.
Could also introduce a card sword effect quite reasonable under those conditions as well. Best, Mike |

Good idea Mike!
And for anyone thinking of doing a pirate voice, you CANNOT use the word "savvy" at all. Because I already stole it from Johnny Depp Chris |

The premise of pirate booty and trade with the far east could be used to introduce some Chinese coin effects. Like... "My great great grandpappy was ships mate to Redbeard the Pirate, who gave him these coins after one of his famous raids on Manchuria." (bit more padding).

Coins with a story have some great power in magical routines....

You can leave them with a feeling of great and wondrous glee too.

Last year I purchased some replica coins from: http://www.jastown.com/coins/coins.htm . There are other places online as well. A great pirate story could be made very magical with some "pieces or eight" or "Spanish Dubloons"
Enjoy!! Mike
Magic is fun!!!

You could also put together a gambling routine explaining why pirates always won even when they lost..

I once created a Gypsy Curse type packet that consisted of one queen of hearts and 7 cards with "the black spot of death" on them. Presumably that's how pirates picked someone from a group who had to die. It was like the old who gets the short straw routine. They would put a black spot on a page from the bible, crumple the page and mix it with other crumpled pages. Whoever gets the black spot dies.
You can devise a presentation using the Gypsy Curse handling around this theme. You can undoubtedly create a presentation around the original set of Gypsy Curse cards too. The idea of the Gypsy Curse seems to fit a pirate theme fairly easily. Mike

Of course, for pirates, the "miser's dream" would be what--"Booty call"?

Misers dream visits Soul Train? Walking Liberty Half Dollars painted to show skimpy pirate costumes?
Taking a more modern approach: Is there really treasure in that stock portfolio? Does the wall street journal contain a secret map? How many parrots does your fund adviser have on his perch?

Kinda hard to do VCA with hook for one hand and a Parrot on your shoulder.
Hmmm... have Joe Porper make a custom hook for your hand, gaffed ala coin wand for miser's dream with dubloons. NO NO NO... DON'T... I can't wait to get one made and do it myselft.
