For years, I've wanted to incorporate a dye-tube routine into my standup show as clever and as strong as Billy McComb's routine. It's a silk routine that you tell clever jokes on top of, and as such, it's unlike anything else I do in my show.
So when I saw my friend Rich Hurley's "Black Hole Silks," it excited me immensely. It utilizes a newly invented gimmick that has an extra something, I can't tell you exactly what, that opens up whole new vistas of possibilities with this effect. I bought the gimmick and watched the videos, and man, Hurley has put in the work. He's developed new types of palms for the tube. He's run it past the best names at the Magic Castle and listened to their brilliant suggestions. He's created a whole routine for the trick, patter and all. But when I started working on it, this gimmick is so brilliant that I started developing my own original palms, acquitments, and moves. In terms of presentation, this trick lends itself to many possibilities there, too. Now that I’ve learned how to use the new gimmick, I’ve got four new solid minutes of laughter and astonishment in my act. That's worth all the money I've spent on half-baked tricks that never fit into your show. This isn't just something you perform for your girlfriend once or twice and throw into a drawer. This is the real work.

Here is the good part trailer:
Here is the listing Black Hole Silks by Rich Hurley Hee is the bad part: Price = $133.50 Shipped Includes: Revolutionary new gimmick with hold out. 1 - 12" yellow silk handkerchief 1 - 12" red handkerchief with a laser cut hole 1 - Beautiful 12" tie dye handkerchief Download instructions for 53 minute video with in-depth teaching, + 4 bonus routines. I can buy a similar routine like Pop Haydn's Color changing Handkerchief for $10, palmo and silks for $25. A smaller dye tube version would be less. Is this routine/new gimmick/silks worth almost 4 times more??? You be the judge... Interesting

As the creator of this effect, please allow me to defend and explain why this product is not priced as low as you might expect for just a dye tube and some silks. It's far more than that!
First of all, let me say that Pop Haydn's silk routine is simply beautiful. If you want to do his routine, I highly recommend it! His video has many good tips on handling silks and dye tubes, but it is basically the same effect that we all know. Black hole silks takes this sucker trick one step further. Instead of just saying you have a second silk secretly concealed in the hand (duh) this routine gives a somewhat more plausible albeit it thinly veiled explanation that the silk comes from a hole, proven by a highly visual and deceptive production of the silk from the hole. Showing the hole gets a great comedic reaction and the production the secret silk from the hole looks quite magical. This production cannot be done with a conventional dye tube. The video includes many different ways to conceal and steal the gimmick I came up with from over two years of experimentation and countless performances. The actual gimmick is very different from the basic dye tube. It's 3-D printed and hand finished. It has a special feature that allows many new ways to palm and steal the gimmick. It also has a built in magnet, for use as a hold out. It's lightweight, a perfect size for three 12 inch silks, or two 18" silks. The 50 minute video comes with 4 bonus routines, including a brilliant idea from the fertile mind of Joe Namsinh, a.k.a. Disco Joe, a regular Magic Castle performer. Joe came up with the idea of making the hole removable, basically combining the sucker egg trick with the color changing silks. This is fully covered in the video Two of the supplied silks are more than just regular silks. One has a laser cut hole. This makes for a clean look and long lasting prop. The other is a beautiful hand dyed multi-color silk you won't find anywhere else and produces a unique ending to an otherwise old and outdated presentation of just having a third color. So, the special gimmick costs more to produce, as do the silks. Add to that the 50 minute professionally recorded video, indexed and hosted for steaming or download. This was not a cheap product to produce. I'll say one more thing. The advanced handling will take some serious practice. This is not a self working trick. Black Hole Silks is intended for serious magicians looking for a new and fun way to present a classic silk routine. I use it all the time. I get great reactions. But the main reason I'm releasing this trick is to get the gimmick in more hands and for them to join my Facebook community to share their handlings and presentation ideas with this cool gimmick.

After viewing the horrible video above, this is not worth the price. Twelve inch silks really! In a large theater, they would not be seen. Where was the color changing effect, I did not see anything but you pulling silk out of hole in a silk, and fumbling at that. Looked more like you using a TT.
For that kind of money, I expect to see a polished presentation, and fumbling with a silk. The hole is so small, you can't get the silk out. Try again, it needs a lot of work. |

I received Black Hole a few weeks ago and I am very pleased with all aspects of the effect -- it's original and innovative, offering a new and fresh approach.
Congratulations Rich! Nat ...interesting how some fellow magicians can judge a new product from just the video demo. Quote:

Thank you for purchasing the gimmick and video Nat. I greatly appreciate your support. Please know I'm here to help with any moves and to help you get this up to performance speed.
I'm flattered by those suggesting the audiences were fake or prompted to react. In fact, the audience responses are 100% real. Real reactions, real strangers and no prompting. The demo video was taken from impromptu "street" performances one evening last November when I was working a conference in Monterey Calif. I can assure every skeptic that the audience responses were in fact real. The "promo" video was done with 18" silks and only shows the hole production phase... however, you might find this video shows the entire 3 silk effect a little better. This is a complete studio performance of the 3 silk routine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyIGyZ9gQrU This is a video of the removeable hole effect, an Idea from Joe Namsinh a.k.a. disco Joe a regular performer at the Magic Castle: https://www.facebook.com/rich.hurley.58/......0183916/ It has been suggested here on the Café that this effect can be done with a thumb tip. I welcome anyone to share a video of them doing this effect with a thumb tip! Bring it on! Seriously, I would love to see it. One might ask, Why produce a the silk from the hole? Well, because it does get great (real) reactions. That's why I thought it good enough to share with the magic community. Over a year of work and experimentation went into the development of the gimmick and the routine. Please don't let the Nay Sayers who've never had the gimmick in their hand dissuade you from looking into this. If you love the color changing silk routine, I'm confident you will love working with this gimmick.
