Hey everyone,
I have a question about these items known as Elastic Loops. Can anyone fill me in on exactly what they're used for? I know that they are used to levitate and move things, but where can I learn tricks to use them in? Is there a book or DVD. Also, would these be appropriate for a beginner/intermediate magician, or are these strictly for the serious thread workers? Thanks in advance |

Loops were the brain child of Finn Jon. They are used for many reasons such as a Haunted Deck, Floating Bubbles, moving silverware, etc.

They're easier to use than IT. But, they break easily, so they can be costly.
I think Penguin Magic has a new take on tying your own.

AS far as resources:
Mesika has a book called "Animated Miracles". Losander shows some effects on his DVD "The Art of Levitation". Mesika's Loops (he biught the rights I believe) come with 3 or 4 routines. What is it that you wish to do?

Well, to clarify a little bit.
As of now, I'm strictly a card worker. I want to expand into other realms though to make myself more balanced. I figured elastic loops might be a good place to go because I can use them to levitate cards and things AS WELL AS other effects, such as moving forks and things. So my question is really, if I have no experience with non-card magic, is the elastic loop possible for me to use, or is it too complicated for my skill level. Also, thanks deceptionguy for the recs on elastic loop books and DVDs. I appreciate it. I was wondering though, it there a dominant elastic loops book? Like cards has Card College and coins have Bobo, do elastic loops have a bible, or is it still too new? And, since the loops are expensive, I was planning on buying the Penguin loop-tying video. Does someone have a review on that? |

I ordered the knot-tying video and elastic thread from penguin, just waiting for my order to go through...when I get a chance to check it out, I will try and inform you asap...if I forget, just drop me a PM...but I have heard that the thread is great, although does break, but with the special knot-tying video as well as the effects taught, I have a feeling the penguin special will be a good purchase

I have also ordered from Penguin, and downloaded the knot tying video.
All looks very logical and the effects are spectacular on the video, so here's hoping mine arrives soon so I can have a go. Let you know how I go on. Wizzy |

Hi Guys,
ULTRA ELASTIC THREAD which is available from your dealer for $25 contains 200 feet of elastic thread and a manuscript teaching almost a dozen effects with the material. You can make loops with our Ultra Thread, but it is not specifically designed for this purpose. Ultra Thread is a little thinner than "loop" thread. There is a lot more you can do with Elastic Thread other than make loops. ULTRA THREAD is an attempt at addressing this. Cheers Ben Harris

Mine arrived from Penguin today - it is incredibly thin and I thought that I had lost the end, but no, the wax was still attached and it had stretched by an amazing amount.
It really is invisible and I shall have to cover my table with white paper while I am preparing the loops to try to keep track. Will report how I go on after a few attempts. Wizzy |

Michael Ammar has a 3 volume set "thread miracles" that is supposed to be very thorough on the matter.

I have made a number of loops now, and it does get easier with practice.
Penguin say you can wear them all the time, but when I tried they were not there when I came to use them - must have caught on an item of clothing and broken. With care you can take them off and put them back on. I have only tried on my own up to now, but they do seem to work quite well on the fork in glass trick using a light plastic fork - take care that the sides of the fork are smooth cos the elastic is so fine that it snags easily. When I downloaded the instruction video (modem link only - 56k -took ages) a message appeared that the download was corrupt and the end bit will not play. I might try again. Very happy with the purchase. Wizzy |

I'm very intrigued by loops, but the only thread experience I have is with the ITR, and I got sick of always having that little gimmick in place, and finding a hookup and so forth. I love the idea of the elastic loops, though -- so simple and utilitarian.
I walked out of the latest Harry Potter movie with my head reeling (no pun intended) with ideas for IT and loops. Floating candles (the smaller birthday types) are one nice idea, and especially stirring coffee or tea without touching the spoon, simply moving your finger in circles as the spoon follows it, etc. Harry Potter is a great source of clever ideas. I've occasionally used monofilament fishing line for non-closeup, but startling, moments of books or a cheap vase flying off shelves behind me; really nice PK stunt ("Oh, sorry... that happens when I get upset sometimes...") Discovering loops makes me want to get back to IT work in general. Seth |

I bought some of the Yigal Mesika loops, and while I haven't really had trouble with them breaking too easilly and you can do some very cool animation effects with them, I find that they're visible against my skin. Maybe I need more sun lol Does anyone else have this problem?

I can confirm that the Penguin elastic thread and download video are excellent value for money. The thread is very fine - perhaps thinner than standard loops and seems strong. The video is very good. I managed a loop my first 3 tries in a row. Occasionally snap one during making but otherwise very straightforward. Potentially 400 loops for under $20 - pretty good value!
