Has anyone seen this effect?
It has been marketed, but I can not find it. The effect is where a ball is given to a spectator to hold. And through magic/hypmosis (depending on presentation), the ball becomes too hot to hold. Is it still available or was it taken off of the market? Does anyone have it who can tell me more about it? THANKS! |

Check out Viking Magic. They list this effect, but do not have it in stock.
I've asked them to make me one, and they keep saying they will. The trick is also in an old Blackstone book The Secrets of Magic, and others. I've thought about trying to build my own. Hope this helps! ...... Manyfingers |

This effect is on the Jon Tremaine "Close-Up" mentalism video.
Aluminum foil is given to a volunteer and it get VERY hot because of your 'mental powers'. Total cost to make about $10-15 US. Hope this helps, - Nicodemus

I do believe Hot Ball is made by Viking and carried by Joe Stevens/Stevens Magic Emporium for a retail of around $65.00 (memory serving me rightly.)
WARNING: This bit typically incorporates a very toxic chemical combination. Though the Viking version is considered "safer" than the old foil bar-trick variation some precautions are warranted.

I think we are talking about two different items. One is the aluminum foil that heats up (Heat is the name of one version), and a metallic ball about the size of a tennis ball that gets hot in the spectator's hands. I recall seeing the latter one in a Steven's Magic Emporium catalog, a few years ago. There was also a metallic ball that would travel up a string (on command), similar to 'Cubio'.

To my understanding the little metal ball works the same as hypno heat... I could be wrong, but that's what I've been told. Speaking of Balls that do stange things things on command ... Timothy Laws in Kentucky came up with a very cool bit that several of us have been playing with... For an example; you're freely bouncing a ping pong ball and, at your command, it can stop in mid-air, move up or down, drop in slow motion, etc. Tim's incredibly simple gimmick allows you to do similar bits with BORROWED bills amongst other items... there's even talk of an amazing off-beat card on ceiling routine that uses this same device. I'm uncertain but I think A Squared will be marketing it. That being the case, perhaps after he's through laughing at what triggered this line of thought, Andy will be able to give you some other details (to those interested.)

It's not fair using Voodoo dolls and candles for getting good deals like that... BTW... Have you checked to see if Joe has any left in stock?

Yup...
The voodoo dolls and candles aren't working for this particular case... :(

The "Hot Ball" was origianlly made by Floyd Thayer and yes, it is relatively safe to use. Hypno Heat on the other hand should be banned from sale as it uses mercury. Even in small doses, it is dangerous and should NOT be used. Anyone that does is a fool. There is a lesser version that uses the foil from Wrigley's Cinnamon Gum but it is not nearly as good.

As Philemon said : The hot ball work with two common ingredients. It's a very old trick much more safer than the crumpled piece of aluminum foil called -hypno heat- which contains poisonous products in it's first version. because if you search a little bit you will find another way to do this -hypno heat- with a very safe and surprising product. I give you a tip for your researches : hypno heat II
But to make you understand a little more what is hot ball, you must know that it is only a container ! So believe me : you can do your own with a little craftwork Moreover you can give your hot ball the shape you want after you understand how it works (mine isn't a ball at all). The only thing to care is that the container must be in metal and hermetic (I hope it's the good word) when it's closed. But for the chemistry principle behind the "trick", you will find it in a good old book of magic. If you understand french, try :"La magie du feu - Alpha" See you soon !

The Hot Ball I do not know much about but whoever posted that we should not fiddle with mercury or mercury compounds is right, dead right.
I sold chemical sprays etc for a few years in the "good old days", including a fungicide (I think) containing a small amount of a mercury compound. I am okay though I contacted with it, DNOC, DDT, 245-T and a few other nasties. But I know that others had severe reactions from much smaller amounts than I would have breathed or touched. SO just because I am fairly okay, physically anyway , doesn't mean that I should say it's okay for others to handle it as casually as we did then. Apart from that, public liability may well get you if you use these types of substances even if the chemicals don't.

I was recently told a by a knowedgable magic dealer that hypno-heat was banned because it severely injured someone and a magic company went out of business because of it.

That's the story I heard too, but I've never seen any real proof.
The Viking version was slow in coming and I think they had troubles with the ball sealing properly. You really don't want leakage spoiling the effect or anything else for that matter. I think it's fixed now. I also think they're using a less dangerous chemical than the earlier "Hypno Heat" version.

There's really nothing wrong with handing pure mercury metal. It's the fumes it lets off that are toxic. And many of its compounds are, too. Of course, you can't really handle mercury metal without inhaling some fumes, so a respirator (with the PROPER filter) and the right gloves are recommended. Read the MSDS and follow all the rules.
But I handled the stuff when I was a kid, and thought it was very cool. I kind of pity the kids today who aren't allowed to just play with the stuff. Like many 'banned' substances, in small doses and carefully handled, it's really not much worse than eating dirt, which all kids do anyway.
