Hello everyone,
As you can tell by the number of my posts, I'm quite new at all of this. I want to buy my first Invisible Deck and would like to know where would you get it from if you were buying one? Thank you |

AFTER you buy your first Invisible Deck, (I would suggest from Madhatter Magic Shop - https://madhattermagicshop.com/magicshop......s_id=385 ),learn to perform with it (magic IS a performance art) and start to enjoy it, you might then be ready to consider more advanced ways to use the concepts just as Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki did in 2012 when he was age 17:

This is such a great trick. But, as Jim says above, you’ve got to learn to perform it, not just operate it.
To answer your question, if I were buying one now, I would send you first to a local magic shop if you can find one. It is worth the drive to see the demo, get someone to walk you through it, and maybe suggest how to present it. Really. If that’s not feasible, I’ve been well treated by all of the following shops https://madhattermagicshop.com/magicshop......ucts_id= https://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/fi......NVISIBLE http://williamsmagic.com/shop/index.php?......id=19830 https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/......le-deck/ If you are looking only for the best price, remember to compare shipping, too. Thank you Jim & Patrick,
I want to support the magic shops but when shipping is almost 2x the cost of the item it's tough to do. I find it hard to believe that it would cost almost $8.00 to ship a deck of cards! |

You could always make your own. There are a lot of options out there. The first thing to remember is that I haven't met one person who has bought an invisible deck from China who has been happy. It will cost a little more, however, Haines House of Cards in Cincinnati, Ohio has great roughed cards.

An alternative is to buy a deck of cards locally along with the ingredient needed to turn it into an Invisible Deck aka Ultra-Mental Deck.

FYI, although Williams has the higher price, they ship free in the US. That’s part of why I suggested comparing costs including shipping.
And if you use the search function, it isn’t hard to find threads about how to rough cards. I’m sure there’s good value in the ebooks Jim sells, but you don’t need to pay to know what roughing spray is. Patrick |

While there is an investment of a trip to Michael's and about $10 for the paint, I have found that I can refresh an invisible deck and/or make new invisible decks with Krylon Matte Finish 1311. The reason I like this stuff is that it's good for most any other sort of trick deck that relies on "rough" cards. Plus, I can make my own with any random deck. I do about 2-3 coats, testing after each coat dries. Try to keep each coat even and do light coats until you get the hang of it. You want to do this with cards that are strong enough not to curl. Each can will do a bunch of decks.

Thank you "notasperfectasyou" I may have to try that. It sounds like a great cheaper solution. I know most small business' can't offer free shipping but an item like a deck of cards is tough to purchase by itself with the added cost. That's not a knock on the business....

Plus it also means you can buy some other special deck, like a marked deck, and add the "rough" to it on your own, thus creating a new kind of deck that you wouldn't be able to buy, but not has more versatility to it. Good Luck. PS - I should have added that the Krylon is a clear spray paint. |

Making your own is certainly an option, but this is your FIRST invisible deck. I suggest buying 1 and learning to use it for now.
In the future if you want to make 1, and if you don't want to deal with the mess and smell of the Krylon 1311/Testors Dull Cote, I highly recommend the Roughing Stick. https://youtu.be/xTAd-COAX74 Same with the spray, a light application is all that's needed. The stick doesn't feel exactly like the spray, but I find the stick easier to use, and you can control which parts of the cards get treated.

Yin_howe,
Thank for that video, it was really informative and useful. I did end up buying an Invisible Deck and absolutely love it. I'll definitely be making a few to have on hand. Bob |

You're welcome Bob.
The R&S principle is used not just for the ID. As you learn more and grow in Magic you WILL find more uses for it.

I would definitely recommend trying an ID made with SCIENCE FRICTION rather than the usual R&S treatment.
I never felt I could trust R&S not to accidentally separate at the wrong moment. SF is in a different league. OR - If you buy an R&S ID deck and have problems, buy an SF one as your second attempt. |

If you search on this forum you will find various people recommending different products if you want to make your own.
These are the products I am aware of - There is a matt varnish spray (Krylon??) that a lot of people like. Sprays of Roughing Fluid specifically developed for magicians - eg Card Shark. Maybe others?? Roughing Stick Science Friction - also by Card Shark If you buy one already prepared, they should make it clear which they use. Pattern of spray. Traditionally you would spray the whole card (back for ID, face for Brainwave). You would need to press soft/hard to get the cards to separate/stick. Now many use a template to create "zones" that are rough or not. This means the cards stick/separate according to where you push. These are likely to be sold as "professional" ID. There are books/DVD's/downloads available usually having Invisible or Ultra Mental in the title. You need to be willing to experiment to see what works for you. Choose an ID, and buy it, then see how you find it. |
