Where can one find more information about the theatrical manipulation of shadow effects? I'm not talking about different types of illusions or methods of shadow boxes, but about how to manipulate the shadow seen by the audience. For instance, an appearance can be done by moving your body in front of the light source, a la the traditional low-tech shadow box. Or you can have an "animation" if you will, like Steinmeyer's Elevator, or a disappearance effect where one instance the magi's shadow is there and moving, the next, the curtain drops and he's gone. I am interested in the technical specs on these "animations".
Much thanks, Steve |

I am also looking for info on these things. I think the basic idea is to make a cut out of yourself on a black cloth, rexine preferably and then slowly unfurl it.
I am in touch with some people who know about it and will post shortly. |

I believe you will have a very long wait. These closely garded secrets are only available thru purchasing one of the illusions that use this technology.
These illusions are out of range of most novice magicians. Illusion builders will not part with their research and development without payment. And rightly so. Your question is confusing as you state you are not interested in illusion secrets, then you give illusion examples. Just go buy a light sheet and a projection machine. Experiment and you may work something out. Failing that, just purchase an illusion from a the inventor. |

Check out Steinmeyer's "Shadow Theater"
That might be what you're looking for. |

That's right Dave.
And Weber I own Jim's Modern art book and have built the Illusion. I have the plan for the Shadow theater but that is not of much help though. I am looking at projecting a shadow like DC does in the Elevator. I have an idea but don't know if I am right. Also I am looking for an idea where the shadow of an object can increase or decrease in size. |

There is also a way to cause a shadow to stay after you cast it using glow in the dark... it is easy. and not magic at all. cover a pice of wood or cloth in glow in the dark paint. then stand in front of it and have bright light cast upon it. when the lights are then turned ouut, the only thing that doesn't glow is the outline of your body. using something like this could be interesting. or you could make this of your hands like a bird then walk up to the shadow and produce a dove from it.

One thouhgt I have played with has been a video projected onto the cloth. You have recorded a shadow movement in apaticular movemnt and pattern. The use a video projector to shoot the video onto the cloth. Now the biggest porblem I see is getting the shadow video recorded.

I believe that the elevator idea (with the shadow effect) was originally conceived by Massey many years ago and was published in his book, the name of which escapes me at the moment. I'll see if I can find it in my library, and if so, will post the name here.
