The early westerns were soft; they were not like Deadwood.

Getting into television I'm going to go off the beaten path and name Firefly as one of my favorite Westerns.

The OP specified that the movie suggestions are intended for an Oriental. So I recommend the movie Red Sun, an inventive combination of cowboys and samurai. Let's face it, what could be more fun than seeing Toshiro Mifune using Judo to throw Charles Bronson flat on his face.

Probably want to stay away from these two:
Billy the Kid vs. Dracula (1966) Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter (1966)
For a supernatural chiller mixing magic (prestidigitation, legerdemain) with Magic (occultism, mysticism), check out my novel MAGIC: AN OCCULT THRILLER at http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Occult-Thriller-Reed-Hall/dp/1453874836

The Magnificent Seven film is an Old West-style remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai which was pretty Oriental.

My dad, who was a rodeo and ranch cowboy before WW2 had a definite favorite.... "Lonely are the Brave" with Kirk Douglas. It's set in the 50's, where cowboys don't belong... but still exist. And you can't forget his horse, Whiskey. The movie involves drinking, jail breaks, bar fights, horses; and even has some mushiness. If you want singing cowboy movies, Comcast currently has a whole slew of Hopalong Cassidy movies, including the movie named "Hopalong Cassidy". Overall elements of a western might include 'bad guys', payroll thieves, cattle rustlers, land stealers; and on occasion Native Americans played (badly) by white guys. Lynn

The Great Train Robbery
It might be hard to believe, but the movie that bears the distinction of being the first Western ever filmed was made in 1903. The twelve-minute long “The Great Train Robbery”, a silent movie, was an immediate hit with audiences and paved the way for scores of other movies set in the mythical “Old West” http://www.westernpolicy.org/

Actually, "High Noon" and "Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" would definitely work. They are iconic westerns, just as the OP asked for.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I don't say it's the best western ever made but it's pretty accessible and contains many of the most prominent tropes of the genre. And it's a great movie. Did anyone mention "Once Upon a Time in the West"? Might be a bit much for this assignment, but should always be mentioned in any list of great westerns. |

Sorry for the late post: she did her homework assignment! And, she got up in front of the class and described the movie.
She saw The Cowboys, which is one of the ones I had suggested to her. She knew John Wayne, but didn't know Bruce Dern, Roscoe Lee Browne, or A Martinez. (I'd forgotten that Robert Carradine and Colleen Dewhurst were in it as well.) She had a good grasp of the plot (spoiler alert!):
She didn't recall that the boys put up a cross to mark John Wayne's "grave". All in all, I was impressed with her recollection. |

A rare instance where The Duke doesn't survive.
That was the biggest shocker to me as a kid.
