I did an in-depth review on the tools I use (made by Eoin O'Hare) in the review section.
https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......orum=113 Thought this would be a good spot to add other items or ideas for fellow self gaffers. My first start was a Magic Maker's DVD on card splitting with Martini. Then I got the Gary Plants DVD. The best book was https://www.lybrary.com/the-gaff-factory......750.html That one really got me to get more serious. Eventually I got a Lassen Card Genii. I also have the Blake Vogt DL's and a few odd different DL's on flap cards and such. The O'Hare stuff really helped me "Take Off" and I am making some really great gaff decks as well as regular gaff cards. I mostly got into serious gaffing when I switched to Phoenix Brand Cards and several of my favorite gaffs were only in Bicycle so I had to learn well and get good fast.

I should also mention that before I got the more “professional jigs”, I was using the blueprints that James P Riser was nice enough to post online. I think I made mine for about $16.00 at the time. It was a slow process, not always perfect but in the end, it did the job for me on a shoestring budget.

I took most of my collection of gaffing tools to my magic club meeting Friday evening to show the other members how I get my gaffs to look so professionally made. They seemed to be impressed with Eoin's Jigs as far as how well they are made, how ingenious they are and the simplicity - once you see how the jigs, once set, can just kind of pump out gaff after gaff with all having the exact same settings locked in. We still did some fun magic beyond the demo I did opening a "new sealed deck" (that flew over without a hitch), tossed aside the ad cards and Jokers after removing the cellophane and the seal, spread it out in NDO, then gave it several nice riffle shuffles and quickly pulled a dozen cards out one or two at a time only to find out they were blind strip-outs of the 4 Aces, the 4 Kings and the 4 Queens. They were very impressed when I showed them how it was "re-packaged" after I put all the N-Stripper work into those 12 cards. All in all, an informative meeting.

Question since you are a seasoned gaffer with cards. I have the Martini DVD, Vogts 2 video's as well as Gary Plant and the Don England lecture and the Gaff Factory. Only Martini says to "work the card" prior to splitting to soften or break up the glue. All the others just take a new card and proceed with splitting it. Any thoughts on this? Do you use the process from Gaff Factory with the iron, mat, "glue" paper (sorry don't have my notes in front of me) or do you just cut, glue, roll and press for a day or two? I am now retired and with the COVID19 here in WA state, am self quarantining due to age and COPD got plenty of time on my hands and decided to start splitting a few decks, and make up some gaffs, flap cards, Shin Lim gimmicks. I have the tools, good knife, scissors, large no cut mat, plexiglass and clamps, small punch for Prim, needle etc also have Elmers rubber cement and Best-Test Paper Cement and erasers. Thanks PS The Perfectshuffle is closed until further notice. Was thinking of these jigs a few days ago especially for splitting.

I work the glue a little using the "snaker" from perfect shuffle but also followed Martini's advice (pre snaker). I have used rubber cement and it does work but using the DMT (dry mount tissue) and an iron gives you much better feeling gaffs. To me, they tend to hold more "snap" to them. I did it all the gaff factory way (pre jigs from Eoin) with good results. Both glue and DMT will require "plexiglass and clamps" for 24 hours or so afterwards.

Hello,
I have been making double-facers and double-backers using Martini's method for a few months now. I have a question for the professionals though... have you made a mis-indexed Ace? I'm trying to make some cards for a Final Aces routine, but struggling to get the cards looking good. I am making an AC with a 2C index at one corner. At the moment, I am splitting a 2C from it's back, then laying this over the AC and cutting out both indexes. I replace the cut out AC index with the 2C one. So far not a problem, but you do get an obvious, if very faint, cut line, and I have also experienced discolouration when using Elmers. I'm going to buy 'The Gaff Factory' as I've never tried the DMT method before. Any tips on replacing one index on a card would be much appreciated! I'll take a picture of my attempts if it would help, and post here. Kindest regards, |

I can’t remember which source I saw it or read it but one said to use a white crayon on the seam to help blend it.

Hello,
Thanks for the tip... so simple I never thought of using one of the kids' crayons to blend the seam. I'll try it on my next batch and let you know how I get on. Kind regards, |

I looked again and it was the Gaff Factory book that had the crayon tip. The Hondo Flap Card vids has a tip of a certain brand of pen in red and blue for seam touch ups too.

Dear fellow-card-gaffers...
Is there still a reliable source for DMT suitable for card gaffing? Especially one within reach of Europe? All former german sources have vanished since the original use of the DMT (mounting photos on cardboard for exhibitions) doesn‘t seem to be of interest any longer as well. Stay safe! Chris

Don Boyer (vice president of 52 Plus Joker) might be a good person to ask about this.
He runs a business gaffing cards over at The Deck Tailor. He's got some interesting things to say about his work in this interview: Interview with Card Gaffer Don Boyer |

If I‘m lucky I‘ll get a 30m/100ft roll of DMT from a shop in the UK - it costs a small fortune but should suffice (in theory) a lifetime... In case this isn‘t working out Don Boyer seems to be a good idea to contact. Thanks and stay safe Chris

Have you tried Amazon? I get 100 8x10 sheets for $42.00 (price currently, I paid a little less last year). Duramount Dry Mount Tissue.

@Poof-Daddy
Some merchants won‘t ship to Germany, others have horrifying shipping charges (the sheets you mentioned have a 30$+ shipping) - I ordered a D&K Fusion 4000 roll from the UK (appr. 60cm x 30m) for 80€ including shipping - I hope this will work as well as the old Bienfang DMT as mentioned in old threads and books and hopefully will last a magician‘s lifetime. Regards from Europe Chris

I have a few sheets of the old Biefang and will hoard it like gold just for me. I sure wish it was still out there. However, the Duramount seems to be working fine for me so far. That order of 100 sheets was my stock up order after trying a 25 or 30 sheet pack. I made quite a few practice gaffs up just to see how it held. The heat it activates at was close to the old Biefang I have so I felt a little more confident and it did work well.

3 new jigs have been added to the review of Eoin O'Hare"s jigs. Scroll down a few for the update (but it is in bold ALL CAPS) so you wont miss it. New reviews added are the "In-Stripper", "Breather Punch" & "Blunt Punch".

To add to Poof-Daddy's comprehensive list of gaffing devices, I'd like to add Wonder Cutter. I don't own Lassen's Card Genii, nor do I own O'Hare's dry mount template, but I do own the Wonder Cutter. With the Wonder Cutter, one can accurately cut cards in half length wise or width wise utilizing an Exacto blade or craft cutter. It also comes with an accessory that allows you to cut ~ quarter size holes in the card. I also use this unit to precisely glue layers of split cards...I'm assuming much like the Lassen Genii and probably like O'Hare's dry mount template. With Wonder Cutter you can also score cards (ala The Bullitt or Jon Allen's device...name eludes me at the moment) for the MCF. Like Poof Daddy, I highly recommend Eoin O'Hare's devices. I have the corner splitter, snaker and card splitter. While the corner splitter and snaker are not as essential, I could not do without the splitter. My splitting skills prior to O'Hare's splitter jig was abysmal. I purchased Vogt's Acro card download and to watch him split a card (at will), without a device is just amazing.

I use Eoin's tools for making gaffs - My best effort took some time, but I made some cards for Alex Elmsley's Dazzle - Lord knows how he made his originals! I would be lost without the splitter jig. I recently bought the breather jig and have made several breather decks, but have mostly used it to create a breather crimp for my decks. (along with a corner short cutter)
