Hello
At the moment I am trying to develop my own version of the spellbound. By this I don’t mean that I want to reinvent all the methods. I was just thinking that it would be better if I had a more “unique” routine and not just a copy of some fellow magician. My goal is that the routine looks magical and I don’t really care if people know there is sleight of hand involved as I just want them to appreciate the magic. To deal with spectators who just can’t stop telling everybody they know how it’s done ( he has two coins) I intend to reveal several coins at the end. So that In a way he is correct but everyone knows that there is no way I could have done the trick while hiding so many coins. ( not quite sure how I will do that but I will try to find a solution to this later). Also, the whole routine should be as much as possible angle prove. The resources I am using are Modern coin magic (Bobo), Coin by Eric Chien, and spellbound by Yuxu. Now as I am quite new to magic and it’s the first time, I am trying to do this I was wondering if someone had any recommendations and advice. Also, if you think that one essential book, DVD, method, etc. could/is missing feel free to mention it (I just don’t have a huge budget, so I intend to buy more with the time). Anyway, thank you for reading this and greetings from Switzerland Clément |

Chris Kenner has a nice approach that accomplishes what you describe in his book "Totally Out of Control" called Hellbound Spellbound. You can also purchase the routine by itself at https://store.theory11.com/products/hell......s-kenner

Remember a routine should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. The changes are only the middle. I have a few routines with multi coin endings. One is on the Penguin Live lecture 2 (Imagine a Coin), and a routine that will have 2 versions in my upcoming book Rubinstein Coin Magic, under the name Chinese Explosion and Chinese Explosion II.

Just a very quick question..We all love quickies...trying to learn the spellbound move....the spellbound grip (for lack of a better word) looks and feels like the get ready for a french drop vanish...they both seem very similar...

The standard holding position is indeed the french drop position (and also called the spellbound position). However, you are certainly not tied to holding the coin for display like that.

Hi Clement, and welcome here...😊
I have a minimalist approach to Spellbound as to my “less is more” thinking as to things...I try not to use all the back & forth that might spur suspicion at times, and instead spend more time on the “convincers” that indeed there is but one coin. 😉 Here, let me show you...

My vote goes to Jerry Dunn for his routine published in March 2020 Genii.
I have always enjoyed the visuals of a good Spellbound,, but never really wanted to perform it. This you will use. |

Once you get started doing a version of the effect you can try out ideas offered in the books and videos suggested. Spellbound is Dai Vernon's version of an item which was popular early last century. The routine comes from a series called The Stars of Magic. There are some very good items in that book from Dai Vernon and other magicians of that time. Finding a version of the changing coin trick which works for you or your audiences is worthwhile. Depending on how your audiences respond to your magic - it may take a while.
