If anyone is interested Old Dad Stevens was living in Chicago and I am from Chicago and I have met another magician that claimed to see some of his work.
What Doc said about the cull is true... And I feel that it is true about most of the culls and stacks. They take to long to run up a hand. From my understanding, from this other magician card shark that claimed to have met him - Dad Stevens used to use the Dad Stevens cull - to get two of a kind to the top and then use the third deal to get his hand. He would peak at the top card while shuffling and then cull two of a kind. And then waite for cards on the draw... If they were playing stud he was two ahead... Also from my understanding - there are two ways to take advantage at the card table. The first way is to take advantage of the mark a little bit at a time. Like using the Dad Stevens cull and the third deal or the punch deal. Take from the mark a little bit at a time and over an evening the sharp comes out a winner. The other is to hit the mark once with a hard blast like a cold deck and possibly wipe them out on one deal. I think that an advantage player would only cold deck once a night. If needed!

Chicago seems to have long history of top card cheats not to mention card magicians. Erdnase published his book there did he not and many others are associated with the city.
I mean no offence by asking this but is Chicago the cardsharp captitol of the world?

Tommy I have no idea if Chicago is or was the card shark capital of the world... But a lot of card sharp and con and crime has happened there. Al Copone used to run Cicero and Chicago and it has had a MOB history.
Nigt clubs speak easy's and salloons there was crime there and grifters and bounders as there was in many large cities. They used to play a lot of poker in Chicago. I have entertained in some clubs in Chicago and the old members used to tell me about the poker games and the grifting of the old days... There was a lot of great magicians in Chicago because of it's location in the Midwest. In the old days there were lots of night clubs and theaters that booked live acts. That is whay there were magicians there... And being in the mid west it was an easy jump to anywhere when they would go out on a tour... Such a NY... It is an easy jump. Grifting and card sharps and magicians seem to cross paths... Chicago has a great magic history...

Hi Glen,
I think you are the only person to 'kind of' verify Dad Stevens existance independently of Vernon. What you say about the Stevens cull makes perfect sense to me. An excellent post. Regards, Paul H |

Thanks Glenn it sounds great to me "My kind of town."
I have never been to the USA I have been put off by fact that all the gamblers I know who go there always come back having lost their money. But I saw Marlos Cardician tape and saw Shullians restaurant in Chicago and fell in love with the place and the people. I intend to go there as soon as I can but I give you fair warning that I will come home with some of your boys money.

I remember Hebba Habba Al and Terry Vecky at the New York Lounge accross the street from magic Inc. The new York Lounge is now a different bar. So is Shullians - the family sold it when Charlie Shullian passed on. Bit O Magic and Houdini's pub are gone... There used to be the Barn with Ernie Spence and the Pickle Barrel with Frank Everheart... Most of the magic bars and places are gone now. There are some restaurants that have magic or a magician but it is not like the old days. Also I used to go and see Jimmy Cards Molinari at Mr. C's Magic Lounge... In fact I used to perform in Houdini's pub and I was hired by Bill Malone. I also performed in Bit O magic and was booked by Magician and comedien Bill Weimer. This was the place that I learned how to entertain. I also performed in the New York Lounge a few nights, Shullians a few nights and several months at Mr. C's before it closed. As far as card playing - when I played cards and it was only draw and stud poker. I did that for about a year when I moved to SL city. But I havent played cards since I got married. Jack Pyle is on the tape that you mentioned about Marlo and was known in Chicago as the punch deck pro. I have video of Jack Pyle doing his bridge deal at my web site. Thank you Paul H... I like the Stevens cull a lot and I use it to cut the aces on my web site and on my DVD about cards. I think it is an under-rated move by many magicians and I use it as a control. I do marlo's simple shift without the key card with it. If you do marlo's shift that brings the aces into the deck together in the center. It is easy to table the deck and do the cull and bring the four aces to the top with one shuffle.

Well I am gutted that I did not go there years ago. I had no idea that Chicago was such a magic place.

I have found documentary evidence that Old Dad Stevens existed, and thus it was not an invention of Vernon. Read my upcoming Lybrary.com newsletter for details.

David Ben told me there was evidence that Old Dad Stevens was a real person many years ago. Don't remember any details but perhaps it's what Chris has found, perhaps Chris has found something new.
What I find interesting is this notion that Vernon lied about things like who he'd met or where/when/what he did. People used to think Vernon wrote a bunch of stuff for Revelations (and that people like Ricky Jay and Persi Diaconis took out all the good stuff). Uh...nope. Vernon thought Erdnase was nearly perfect and only made small comments where he thought appropriate. Tony Giorgio used to claim Allan Kennedy was a figment of Vernon's imagination. Uh...nope. We've got pictures of the guy! Whether or not he did the center deal as well as Vernon claims we'll likely never know, but he was a real person, not just a story made up to help "sell" Vernon's fascination with the move. And now Dad Stevens. Some (Giorgio included), say he wasn't real. Now Chris discovered and released evidence that he was in fact real (and perhaps David before him). Can anyone name a single instance of a popular story in the magic literature where Vernon definitely invented someone or something out of whole cloth? I can't. Jason
